Working with multiple accounts (work/personal) – macOS
Hello, employees in my company have a work and sometimes also a personal account.
Both obviously do not use the same password at all, the work one is using an external IdP and requires regular re-authentication.
I am looking for tips and tricks to improve the UX, regarding the below challenges. Scenario is: private account unlocked, work account locked.
- When opening the quick access and all accounts are selected, there is no visual indication that the work account is locked.
- There is no way to trigger unlocking the work account from quick access, user needs to open the full desktop 1password app, then click and select the work account.
- There is no visual indication in the browser that the work account is locked, it just does not fill out passwords.
- Unlocking the work account from the browser seems to require launching the full 1password desktop app.
Maybe I missed some simple tricks, please let me know.

Hello @hobbes444! 👋
Thank you for reaching out! Better support for using multiple accounts, especially for cases where someone might be using one account secured with an account password and another secured with SSO, is something that our team is discussing internally.
Have you already enabled biometric unlock for your users? If you have then they'll be prompted to unlock with their identity provider much less often. When users unlock 1Password using biometric unlock, all accounts added to the app are unlocked at once :
- Use Touch ID to unlock 1Password on your Mac
- Use Windows Hello to unlock 1Password on your Windows PC
- Use system authentication to unlock 1Password on your Linux computer
Let me know if you have any questions.
