Initial startup screen always appearing

I recently updated to 1Password 4 from the MAS. As part of the upgrade I decided to completely erase everything related to 1Password on my system and reimport all my items from a .1pf file. The import process worked successfully and everything appeared fine in 1Password until I restarted 1Password. Now, the "Welcome to 1Password" screen appears every time I start the app, and the settings on the General Preference pane don't save. I get prompted to enable 1Password mini every time I close 1Password.

As part of this upgrade, I switched from Dropbox sync to iCloud sync. I was part of the 1Password 4 betas, but I did not use iCloud sync during that time.

    Hi @abecevello,

Let's see if we can't sort this out. If you still have that .1pif file, we're going to start over fresh:

    • Open a Finder window and Go To ~/Library/Containers/
    • Drag the following files to your desktop: com.agilebits.onepassword-osx and 2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper
    • Restart 1Password

This will require you to set things up again, but it should go more smoothly this time around! If you run into any snags, please let us know :)

I did the steps you asked and still had the same issue, although 1Password reconnected with the data in iCloud.

I then told iCloud to stop syncing with iCloud and deleted the iCloud data, then performed the steps you posted. With no items in my keychain, 1Password always shows the "Welcome to 1Password" screen every time, and forgets the General Preference pane settings. I continue to get the 1Password mini prompt on every close of 1Password. Additionally, the 1Password screen is forgetting its size and position from previous launches. It looks like its positioning settings with Mac OS X isn't being saved.

I forgot to mention in my original post that I am running the Mavericks beta (fully up to date with the App Store updates). Any other ideas for how to solve this issue I am having?

  • Hi @abecevello,

It sounds like there's something wrong with the preference file. The welcome screen's setting is saved in your preferences file, just like your Preferences in the main 1Password app as well.

    Try this:

    1. First, quit 1Password mini from the menu bar, which will also quit your main 1Password window.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Preferences
    3. Locate any plist file related to 1Password 4 and move them to the desktop
    4. Now, open 1Password and see if it'll work better now.

I quit 1Password and 1Password mini, deleted the com.agilebits.onepassword4.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences and reopened 1Password 4. The same problem happens and I noticed the preferences file isn't recreated.

I just restarted my computer and everything with 1Password appears to be working fine now. Thanks for all the help troubleshooting this issue!

Glad you've resolved this, @abecevello. Thanks for letting us know. Sometimes a restart is all it takes to persuade something to work correctly on OS X. :)

I'm having the same issue with the persistent login screen. It's happening on one of my Macs. Every time I open 1P, I get the initial login screen and my preferences are hosed.

    Hi Dane,

Since you've already tried the fixes previously suggested here, let's take a closer look at your system. Could you please send us a Diagnostics Report?

Download the 1Password Troubleshooting utility and follow the instructions to generate the report.

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@ agilebits .com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

As luck would have it, I resolved the problem before generating the report. After my second full uninstall of 1Password on the problem machine I rebooted into the recovery drive and did a disk permission fix--nothing was found. When I started up again and loaded 1Password, it found my iCloud documents and showed the correct counts. I then created a test secure note on another machine (machine #1) and it correctly copied over to the problematic machine (#2). When deleting that test note from machine #2, however, the item doesn't sync and show up in the trash of machine #1. I will send an email with the diagnostics.

    UPDATE

Right after I sent the log, I emptied the trash on machine #2 and it finally synced properly to machine #1. It appears there's a problem syncing items that are in the trash.

    Hi Dane,

I'm so glad to hear that you were able to get the problem sorted out! I'm not quite sure that what you are seeing with the trashed items is necessarily a bug, though. Here's why: When you sync with Dropbox, every time a change is made to your database 1Password initiates a sync. We are not able to do the same with iCloud. iCloud sync is still very much a closed system to us - it occurs on its own schedule, regardless of when changes are made. In some cases, it can be 20 minutes before items are fully synced up.

Our support team would be happy to take a peek at your Diagnostic Report though just to be sure that nothing is going wonky :)

I'm not sure it's a "bug" but it's unexpected behavior to me. If I move something to the trash on one device, I expect it to be in the trash on my other devices. The reason I think it's a bug is because other changes I've made (i.e. anything but trashing an item) sync within about 15 seconds to my other devices. So it seems like iCloud gets the update rather quickly and the other devices detect the change and pick it up. It seems like the trash action isn't picked up by/stored on iCloud.

    Hi Dane,

Let's try resetting sync to see if that gets your trash syncing a bit better:

    • On your iOS devices, open 1Password 4 for iOS, tap Settings > Sync, and toggle iCloud to OFF.

    • On the Mac, open 1Password 4 for Mac, and click the 1Password menu, then Preferences. Click Sync, and click Change syncing.

    • Check the box to remove the data from iCloud and confirm that you want to disable sync.

    • Reboot the Mac and iOS devices.

    • On the Mac, go back to the Sync preferences, and enable iCloud.

    • Wait about 20 minutes to give iCloud time to run the initial sync to all devices.

    • Go back into the iOS app and re-enable iCloud sync. It should work this time.

Megan, I tried something similar to this on my own a couple weeks ago (thereabouts) and it resolved the issue. The problem is, I had to do this a couple of times. I'm satisfied it's working now, just holding my breath hoping it doesn't happen again.

    Thanks for the followup, Dane.

I had an "unsynced Trash items" issue with Folder Sync a few weeks ago, then it started working okay after disabling/reenabling syncing and the problem hasn't returned since. I'm keeping an eye on it.
