    Hi, Tuur!

    The main difference is that only the Mac App Store version supports iCloud Sync. From Frequently Asked Questions:

    Should I purchase on the Mac App Store or from your website?

    >

    To use iCloud syncing you should purchase on the Mac App Store, but ultimately the choice is a personal preference. Using the Mac App Store makes it easier since you don’t need to keep track of a license key. On the other hand, purchasing from our website is also great since 1Password provides a great way to keep track of software license keys, and you will receive updates faster as we approve them directly.

    I hope that information is helpful for you!

    Actually no, that information is not helpful unless the ONLY differences between the MAS store and direct purchase 1Password 4 are iCloud sync and not needing a license key for the MAS version. As it reads now one could argue the FAQ implies the MAS version doesn't have the ability to track software license information. There's got to be other differences. How about a full list of them for folks like me that want to know before we purchase?

    Thanks.

    Ok, I'm confused and even a bit irritated here. I was under the very distinct impression that you guys would only be distributing 1Password via the Mac App Store (see references below) and since a free upgrade was promised to ease the transition, I went ahead and re-purchased 1Password 3 off the MAS despite already having a license. I normally prefer to not buy off the MAS since so much software comes off there crippled compared to their "direct sales" counterpart, but hey... this was supposed to be the ONLY way to get 1Password going forward. Now that 1P4 has finally been released, I see that not only isn't the case, but there are differences between the two. So yeah... I would also like to know what the exact differences are, not just the "main" one. I did of course get the free update off the MAS as promised, but now I want to know just how crippled it really is, if it is.

  • Hi John,

    Back in 2011 the plan was to move the Mac App Store distribution completely and abandon the web store version. Needless to say... things didn't go as planned for several reasons and we are now offering 1Password for Mac from both Mac App Store and AgileBits store.

    Since you already purchased the app from the Mac App Store, I sent you the free license for the AgileBits store version.

    Hi,
    I too bought the 1Password through the Mac store like the day before yesterday thinking there was no difference but now i'm confused. I'm not sure which one is the better/smarter choice. The iCloud syncing is not really a show stopper cause you can use the wi-fi syncing method. So could you please tell me what the difference is between the two and if it's possible to switch to the other in case that's the better choice. I do hope you can understand what i'm trying to express here. It's a bit difficult cause english is not my native language. TIA

    Yes, reading this all is confusing... I bought The MAS version because I thought and read somewhere that it only that way was to buy the app. ??? Misguided?
    And do I really need the iCloud version? No!
    I understand now that there will be always a time difference between the MAS and the web version?

    And will the MAS version upgrade to the ability to track software license information?

    Will the MAS version always being the same or upgrading the same as the web version (except the iCloud thing)?

    More questions now...

    Regards,
    Tuur.

    @roustem, I am in the same situation as @John Vann. I too bought the MAS 3 update to get 1Password 4 as a free update. Yet - as we all know- store versions an be updated much easier so I therefore also want to switch to the store version. FYI use Dropbox sync only

    Can you mail me a store license too ?

    Thank for your kind help

    p.s. people start complaining on this at MacUpdate too

    FYI: I received the web store license today and migrated to the web store version without any hassle. Now I only need to know which MAS files to delete :)

  • Hi guys,

    @naldo:

    The iCloud syncing is not really a show stopper cause you can use the wi-fi syncing method. So could you please tell me what the difference is between the two and if it's possible to switch to the other in case that's the better choice.

    Beside the iCloud, integrated update checker in Mac App Store app, slower app update process (because Apple have to review each update) and sandboxing provided by OS X, there aren't any major differences.

    Both Mac App Store and the website versions are identical and will alway be updated with the same features, it is just distributed by two different app stores owned by two separate companies.

    There is no bad or better choice. If you're happy with the Mac App Store, you should stick with it.

    @Tuur_L

    I bought The MAS version because I thought and read somewhere that it only that way was to buy the app. ???

    As Roustem mentioned, that was the original plan but we changed our minds later as several things have changed.

    And do I really need the iCloud version? No! I understand now that there will be always a time difference between the MAS and the web version?

    It's just an optional sync support in the MAS, you can turn it off if you don't need it.

    I'm not sure what you mean by "time difference", are you talking about the updates? Both MAS and website versions will be updated with the same features beside iCloud. The MAS may be delayed by a week or two because it needs to be reviewed by Apple before they can approve it.

    And will the MAS version upgrade to the ability to track software license information?

    I'm not sure what you mean, both MAS and website have software license categories that you can add. There are no differences here.

    If you're talking about the ability to drop apps into the 1Password app to auto-create the software license items, that's something we'd like to add in the future but no timeframe just yet.

    Will the MAS version always being the same or upgrading the same as the web version (except the iCloud thing)?

    Yes.

    @mgshoutman:

    Now I only need to know which MAS files to delete.

    You just have to remove the MAS app file and you're all set.
