Problems with restore

I made the Upgrade over the AppStore to Version 4 and now I try to restore my old zip Backup, but I cannot select anyone. Even the Backup is not working. I made the workaround restarting the iMac or restarting the mini application but I cannot backup. I deleted the old Beta but maybe something went wrong and there is a problem. Can somebody tell me exactly where the Backups and the Database files have to be?

  • Do you have the .agilekeychain_zip file? Please try to copy it to .agilekeychain.zip file. You should be able to unzip it to the regular .agilekeychain package.

The 1Password 3 backups are stored in ~/Library/Containers/com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper/Data/ folder.

Thanks. Where is Version 4 searching for Backups? If I unzip zip Package as you wrote, where must I move it to be read by Version 4?

  • There are two options. You can merge the contents of this file into your current 1Password 4 vault or you could start over with this file.

Merging is the easiest: select 1Password > Preferences > Sync > Folder and then choose the "1Password.agilekeychain" that you recovered from the backup.

Let me know if you would like to start over and I will post the instructions here.

Thanks a lot. It worked. Anywhere I uninstalled the Version 4 from MAS and installed it again. It is out of thread but I have another question about the "footsteps" of the the old Version 3. Is there an easy way to erase them? I found a Version 3 uninstall program, but I suppose it's not for the MAS Version 3. If you tell me that I can let all as it is, I would follow your suggestions. Thanks again for help.

  • Great to hear!

There is the ~/Library/Containers/com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper that was used by 1Password 3 app. If you would like to remove it then I suggest to keep an archived copy of it for now until you are comfortable with version 4.

NOTE: Version 4 is using ~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper folder. Be careful to not mix them up!

Hi @RobbyTheTobby. On behalf of @roustem, you're most welcome. Always having enough backups is a good way to stay on the winning side of careful. :)

Hi roustem, I have had the same problem but when I got to unzip the file I switched over from .agilekeychain_zip to .agilekeychain.zip this is what I am getting It isn't letting me unzip into a package.

    Hi @JasonEBianchi,

Those files/folders in the image are what's "inside" the Agile Keychain folder bundle. If they're extracted separately like that from the ZIP archive here's how you can fix it:

    • In Finder, select all four files/folders (1Password.html) and three folders (a, config, data) shown in your image.
    • Select New Folder with Selection (4 items) under the File menu (or press the Control-Command-N keyboard shortcut):

    • A new folder named New Folder With Items will be created, e.g.:

    • Type 1Password.agilekeychain to rename the folder with that filename, then click Add to confirm adding the extension:

    • After that you;ll have a usable Agile Keychain named 1Password.agilekeychain, e.g.:

    I hope that helps. :)

That helped enormously. I am also having troubles understanding how to load it into 1Password... I am running 4.1.2. When I hit import or restore it will not let me select it. I am sorry I am not familiar with the library folder and was unable to locate it. I truly appreciate your help.

I'm glad to hear that helped, @JasonEBianchi. :)

Do you already have data in 1Password 4.1.2 and would you like to merge it with data from the 1Password.agilekeychain keychain? Or could you start over and just use data from the keychain? Do you know the Master Password to unlock it? And if you can see the keychain in Finder it might be more convenient to move it to Desktop, at least temporarily. Finally, do you have syncing configured in 1Password on any systems/devices?

Thanks in advance for answers to those questions that will help get this sorted out for you.

Hello, sorry for the late response... my old man had an IMac from 2008 that lost the harddrive, he is upgrading tomorrow to a new IMac. I will try everything you have said and get back with you sometime tomorrow evening.

    You're never late around here, @JasonEBianchi. :)

I hope everything goes smoothly with the iMac upgrade and getting 1Password 4 working!

Hi, I just reinstalled OSX on my MacBookPro, and as I had my 1Password keychain synced with Dropbox, I didn't think of checking wether it had synced. Unfortunately just now, I realise that dropbox hadn't synced for 3 months and that instead of having 40 items, I only have 4. Fortunately I copied the Library folder from my mac before doing this clean install, and so I have the latest backup (with all the items).

For some reason, when I follow the steps that you stated at the top, and create the 1Password Keychain, I open it up in the application and create the vault but there are no items at all.

  • Hi @lucasmateu,

Are you seeing any errors or other strange things, or is it just the blank vault?

You could try enabling folder sync, and point 1Password to the .agilekeychain file that you would have created from the instructions above.

Or you can go to File > Restore... in the menu bar and select your .agilekeychain_zip file to restore.

Please let me know if that helps, or if you still need further assistance.
