Difference between MAS, website and beta version?

Hi,

I have read today that there is a website edition of 1PW. Is there a difference to the MAS version? Does it get more often updates as the MAS version?

I´ am thinking about uninstalling my MAS version, because I used before the beta and now both together is crap. The MAS does not work very well (I know the migration way - but I have read it to late).

What about the license of the beta? How can I license it, I see that the beta expires in 20 days.

@pauLee, there has been a number of discussions about this. See here, for example.

Edit: a number of us are using the beta. I'd imagine new versions will be issued long before any expiry date.

    Hi, @pauLee.

I hope @Stephen_C's response (thanks!) was helpful to you.

Here's a thorough topic about switching from the 1P4 MAS to website version:

Convert from MAS to direct version?

I'll see about adding expiration/licensing details to our beta information.

Is there anything else you'd specifically like help with?

Can I use the guidance "Convert from MAS to direct version" to go back to the beta as well?

If I understand right ... anyone who uses the beta can run 1PW for free if the beta programm still exists? (don´t worry ... I have a license for mac, win and iOS ;-))

In order to heat up this discussion again: are there any notable functional differences between the MAS version and the "web version" of 1password? What could be the motivation to migrate to the web version?

I am a first time user of 1password since only a few days, and after some reasoning I decided to go for the MAS version due to ease of automatic notificiation of updates. Mind you: I don't care if an update of the MAS version takes longer (due to Apple's review process or whatever).

So are there any known/documented restrictions (due to "sandboxing" and MAS restricted APIs) of the MAS version, in comparison with the "web version"?

You don´t have iCloud sync in the web version. The MAS has iCloud sync (is a restriction from Apple).

So, has anyone some answers to my questions?

@pauLee: Thanks for your reply: in the meantime I also found this discussion with the same topic.

  • Hi guys,

    @pauLee:

Is there a difference to the MAS version?

Yes, there is a small list of differences. MAS version gets official iCloud syncing and it has the mandated sandboxing (website is not sandboxed at the moment) from Mac App Store. The paths to backups/data files are different but this one is not really a big deal.

Does it get more often updates as the MAS version?

Usually, yes, but the MAS version will always be identical to the website version's feature set. Basically, the website version will get smaller updates quickly and the MAS version will get bigger ones that combine multiple smaller updates from the website version.

Many of our users configure 1Password to check for updates once a month, so they don't get hit with weekly updates. That'd be like the same frequency of updates for MAS, you get updates biweekly or monthly that contain all the updates we made to the website version. This is just a very basic of how it'd work, there may be some updates that don't make it to one version. Like in this case, the 4.0.3 version is only released at MAS because it contain sandboxing fixes that don't apply to the website version.

I´ am thinking about uninstalling my MAS version, because I used before the beta and now both together is crap. The MAS does not work very well (I know the migration way - but I have read it to late).

Yes, we don't recommend running both builds. You'd have to choose which one you want to use.

If you went to switch to the website version (or beta), this guide explains how. When it says Download 1Password 4 from our website, don't use that link, instead use the link from the HockeyApp beta email we sent you.

Edit: a number of us are using the beta. I'd imagine new versions will be issued long before any expiry date.

We're planning to release an update, the app will work even if the trial expires though. We didn't enable the kill switch just yet.

If I understand right ... anyone who uses the beta can run 1PW for free if the beta programm still exists? (don´t worry ... I have a license for mac, win and iOS )

Yes, it'll be free for beta testers for as long as the beta program is open and we usually never close such betas for a long time. The reason is that the beta testers are giving us their valuable time and feedback in exchange to using our betas without paying for it.
