Upgrade Conundrum

I'm a 1Password user with version 3.9.6 from the MAS running on my Mac, and 3.7.2 running on my iOS devices. I never upgraded my iOS devices because WiFi sync was important to me, and until recently, it wasn't available as part of your v4 software. Since I purchased 1Password from the MAS, I've been prompted to upgrade my software to the latest version --- but I've read that version 4 of the desktop 1Password is incompatible with v3.x of the iOS software.

So I'm basically stuck. If I choose to update 1Password on my Mac to v4, then I'm obligated to spend more money on my iOS version in order to update that to the latest version.

If I choose not to update my software on my desktop, I'm forced to ignore the available update, and I'm not able to ever use the "Update All" button from the MAS ever again.

Furthermore, is WiFi syncing working perfectly on the v4 platform? I understand your company has always deemed this functionality problematic, but it's the only way I want to sync my devices.

While I appreciate that you've provided a free update for MAS customers, doing-so only on one platform forces the hand of customers that may not always upgrade to the latest paid versions of your software. The only resolution I see for my particular situation is to pay $18 for the latest iOS version so that I have something that works with the MAS update that sits in my AppStore application waiting to be clicked.

Is there any other remedy for my particular situation, or am I stuck choosing between staring at an available update that I cannot apply, or buying $18 to make things continue to work together?

Thanks

  • @ultrabits A possible (free) solution for you: Switch to the AgileBits website version of 1Password 3 and delete the MAS version. Then you won't have to constantly look at the update there, and you can use the update all button again. I'm just a user, but I would think that AgileBits would provide you with a license key for that.

You can email your MAS purchase receipt to the address on our contact page with something like "Bought MAS and want the webstore" for the Subject. Thanks!

(If you do decide to try this, I'd make it clear that you are looking for a v3 web store license, not v4.)

But in my opinion, the price to upgrade to 1Password 4 for iOS is worth it! And the 4.3 update just released includes wi-fi sync with v4 on Mac (though I don't use it, so can't tell you that it works perfectly). There's lot of other useful features in v4 too: http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/iOS/ios-why-upgrade.html

    Hope that helps a bit!

  • Hi @ultrabits,

JasperP is correct. You could switch to the website version of 1Password 3, we will give you a free license v3 (and v4 if you want) upon receiving your proof of purchase from Mac App Store.

There is one thing you need to consider if in case you want to move to 1Password 4 for the Wi-Fi sync. The Wi-Fi sync in 1Password 4 is still young and we're working on more improvements coming in future updates but right now, it cannot sync file attachments. Although, it might not be a ding for you since 1Password 3 doesn't do attachments anyway. The Wi-Fi sync has been completely overhauled in 1Password 4 and so far, we're hearing a lot of great praises for it, just some things we need to improve on such as more integration, automated syncing, and many more. All of which are something we do plan to work on.

In the Mac App Store,if you go to your Purchases Tab and hover your cursor over the line for any one of your applications, a X appears at the right end of the line. Click that and the app in question disappears from your list of purchases and you don't get reminded again.

Don't misunderstand me, though. I think the best course is to update.

  • @Hawkmoth, thank you, I forgot there was an option to hide apps like that.
