iOS 1Password 4.3 has iCloud syncing turned on by default - causes confusion with WiFi syncing

I just downloaded the new 1Password 4.3 for iOS on my iPhone & iPad and immediately (after deleting old version 3 and pre 4.3 versions) started setting up both of them for WiFi sync. After reading the instructions (http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/Mac/en/Features/Sync/wifi.html) I got both devices in sync with my Mac desktop 1Password 4.0.2.

Some comments - because I think you will have some confused users with WiFi syncing.

  1. I noticed that on both the iPhone and iPad that 1Password was syncing with iCloud - what gives I thought?!? Then I discovered that on both devices that 4.3 had iCloud syncing turned on by default. I suggest you change that... it is going to cause problems.... This is while they were both syncing via WiFi with my desktop (which BTW has a wired only connection) 1Password.
  2. I turned off iCloud syncing on both devices and they seemed to complete syncing with my iMac via WiFi. The number of documents match.
  3. On the iMac 1Password I went into Preferences | Sync but it does not show any of the three syncing methods are active (like it does on iOS). When I clicked on iCloud it said there was a copy of a 1Password vault already on iCloud and it was going to merge with my desktop 1Password - nooooo. Where did that come from? I didn't do it - did the iOS devices which (incorrectly) already had iCloud selected as sync method after clean install. I cancelled the sync.
  4. To kill the 1Password (partial??) vault copy on the iMac I had to go into System Preferences | iCloud | click Manage button bottom right then find 1Password in the list of manage storage, select it, then delete all documents.

p.s. BTW the Categories list is not in the same order in the desktop 4.0.2 version compared to the iOS 4.3 version. Would be nice if they were in same order (yes I know they can be moved around).

    Bump.

Any official response? Will this be correct in future versions? iCloud syncing should not be automatically enabled during install.

When I upgraded to version 4.3 on iOS iCloud sync was not enabled by default so it doesn't seem to apply to everyone.

Hmmm - so it's inconsistent then, which is worse. My situation was I had 3.x and 4.x installed on my iPad but was using 3.x because 4.x did not support WiFi syncing. When new iOS 4.x came out on iPad I uninstalled both versions (3 & 4) and installed new version of 4.

On iPhone I only had version 3.x, I uninstalled that and installed latest 4.x version. Did it this way because I was defining the desktop OS X database to be 'master'.

When I installed new copies on both iPad and iPhone the iCloud syncing was turned on for both and they started pushing data to iCloud. Then on the Mac when I looked at iCloud setup it said there was already vault on iCloud and it would merge databases (which I stopped obviously).

Again it would be good for someone from AgileBits to comment.

There are two possible reasons why iCloud sync didn't default to "on" for me:

    1. I upgraded from 4.2.7 to 4.3, without uninstalling 4.2.7 on my iDevices.
    2. I don't in any event have iCloud enabled for anything other than "Find my..." iDevices.

I suspect the second reason is the more likely one.

I have no doubt at all that someone from AgileBits will weigh in. It may just take a little time because of the pressure they are under at present.

    Hi @FromOZ,

I am sorry to hear about your struggles getting Wi-Fi syncing set up. There are actually two separate issues here, both of which we are working to resolve as soon as possible.

First of all, iCloud sync should not be on automatically after using other sync methods such as Dropbox, iTunes File Sharing, and Wi-Fi sync. Secondly, in the future the app will be updated to ask the user if the iCloud data it found should be used or if the user wants to open a new data-file instead, to avoid any confusion and situations like this.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience, but I'm glad to hear that you were able to get synced up eventually. :) If you have any further questions, we're here to help!

Hi @Megan — I got it going OK. Good that the problems were able to be identified/confirmed and the improvements will help users.

    Hi @AndrewParker,

First of all, I'd like to apologize for that "hour of fun" you endured getting 1Password sorted out. I really appreciate you including the steps that you went through that (finally) got things working again. I'm including the link on Resetting your 1Password Data in iCloud just in case you do run into a situation where you have to reinstall again - although I sincerely hope that you don't!

To explain our decisions a bit, it was not our intent to promote iCloud per se, but merely to make life easier for those who did want to keep everything tucked neatly inside their iCloud. However, we have been getting feedback from many users who are not finding this as useful and intuitive an option as we had planned, so we are exploring ways to make sync options clearer and more user-friendly. :)

Please do let us know if you run into any other snags or glitches - we're here to help!

    Hi @AndrewParker,

You're right, it can be a bit of a balancing act when designing software for a large group of users with both different skill levels, and different security/convenience concerns. We really appreciate your understanding :)
