Syncing Local Across Multiple Macs via 1Password 4
With 1Password 3, I was syncing my 1Password.agilekeychain directory/file structure with unison across my different mac machines. This allowed my macs to always have the same password files. I have a few questions.
1. Does this type of file/directory structure exist in 1Password 4? Or something similar? That I can sync across multiple machines?
2. I see there is a new folder sync option. Can I have 1Password folder sync to a network share (or to a local directory sync'ed by unison) and have multiple 1Passwords sync to that share? Will all the 1Passwords say up to date? Any chance of corrupting the 1password file?

Hi @codinghack,
You are correct, Folder Sync is what you are looking for. Our article on how to set things up is here: http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/Mac/en/Features/Sync/folder.html
As to your question about potential data corruption, the best protection against this is to ensure that you are running frequent backups of your 1Password data. 1Password will perform automatic backups, but you can always use File > Backup to create a fresh backup before making any significant changes to your database.

(Thanks @Stephen_C ... I've fixed that error :) )

I'm still confused. The "Sync with local folder" article seems to say that each Mac could automatically sync to a folder local to that Mac but then the user would have to manually sync the two local folders by some other method - Unison for example.
However, the "How to share a non-primary vault" article says multiple Macs can share a non-primary vault by telling them all to sync their copy of that vault to the same, shared folder. It's not obvious to me at least why this works with non-primary vaults but not with primary vaults. Does it really not work technically or are there operational reasons why it's a bad idea?
This is important because I'd also like to sync an iPad to the same vault. But it's my understanding that both the new WI-FI and the older USB interfaces can only sync an IOS device to the the Mac's primary vault.
So is there any way for multiple Macs and IOS devices to sync their databases on a local network?

Hi @SVanDee,
I'll do my best to clear things up for you here.

You're correct. Folder sync does require a home network or a sync solution (like Dropbox or Unison) to keep the folder synced up across multiple computers.

Without getting into too much detail, primary vaults are handled slightly differently in the back-end than secondary vaults. So we do not recommend setting a primary vault to sync to another user's secondary vault, unless you get some specific instruction on just how to do so from one of our technical gurus.
I'd also like to sync an iPad to the same vault. But it's my understanding that both the new WI-FI and the older USB interfaces can only sync an IOS device to the the Mac's primary vault.
At this point, multiple vaults are a Mac-only feature, so you're right, the iOS device can only sync to your primary vault - no matter what sync solution you use. Multiple vaults is a feature that we hope to bring to iOS soon, although I can't give you a timeline on just when we'll have that update available.
If you would like some more detailed instructions on your particular situation, please send an email in to support+forum@ agilebits .com with the version numbers of your operating systems for all computers and devices currently running 1Password, and some further information about how many users and how many vaults are involved here.
