Update to version 3.8.21 (build #32009) fails due to lack of permissions

At work, where I don't have admin permissions on my Mac, I have 1Password installed for myself in my home dir's Applications folder created by me specifically to install apps by myself for myself.

Usually, all is good. This time though, while running 1Password and attempting an update to 3.8.21, I'm getting a message:

"1Password does not have permission to write to the application's directory! Are you running off a disk image? If not, ask your system administrator for help."

and a "Try Again" button.

That message is wrong since I do have permissions to my Application folder where I previously installed 1Password.

Sounds like a bug.

  • Hi @peterq,

That's likely because it's trying to check for 1Password.app in your /Applications folder, not ~/Applications. Did you ever have that issue in the past with the previous versions or is this the first time?

Note that there aren't any updates available for 3.8.21, it shouldn't be finding anything anyway.

I'd recommend reinstalling 1Password 3.8.21 and see if that'll fix the auto-updater check.

@MikeT: yes of course it's trying to do that and that's the bug.

I don't recall that problem previously and I'm a long time user. It could be that I was installing upgrades myself though and that I have been declining auto-upgrades, I don't remember.

Note, the upgrade is to 3.8.21 not from. Anyway I reinstalled the latest revision manually and will watch for the same behavior and I'll report it here if I see it again.

    Thanks for the response!

Hi, @peterq. On @MIkeT's behalf, you're welcome. Glad to hear his reinstallation recommendation worked for you!
