installation problem - 1Password 3 extension shows no data prior to install

I downloaded 1Password 4 on 10/27, but opened it on Firefox for the first time today. Got the message box about the 1Password 3 extension but can't follow the instructions for removing it. Coincidentally, the Password 3 extension dropdown has been unresponsive to my password for a couple of days. The desktop 1Password 3 worked for a while longer it seems, but that became unresponsive to my password and I closed the app down. This morning I could open the Firefox extension without a password, but it has no data and is unresponsive to adding any. Both 1Password 3 and 4 are in my application file. I'm reluctant to to play around with anything now for fear of losing data. Some knowledgeable advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Welcome to the forums @linet! Let's see if I can help you out.

At first read I'm not really sure exactly what the problem is. When you say "unresponsive to my password" do you mean that you could not unlock 1Password? Were you told your password was incorrect or did it simply never respond?

By the sounds of it you have the new 1Password 4 app installed but are using the older 1Password 3 browser extensions. This is easy to fix but as you saw in my discussion with @batkins it is very important to ensure all your data has synced from the extension to the main application before uninstalling them so don't uninstall them just yet.

Are you able to open the main 1Password 4 app and see your data there? If so we can focus our efforts on getting 1Password 4 to work for you. If not, we'll need to investigate what's happening with 1Password 3 first.

@dteare, thanks for the welcome and help! I think you're right--the new 1Password installed correctly, but something weird happened with the extensions. I removed and installed the new extensions in Safari and Chrome, then went back to Firefox and did the same without any trouble. I still have 1Password.app in the applications folder. Should I put that in the trash?

  • Oh good, it sounds like you got things sorted :)

Yes, you can move the previous 1Password.app to the Trash once you're sure you have 1Password 4 running smoothly.
