1Password keeps getting auto locked...

Hi.

I have all of the Auto-Lock preferences unchecked, but still 1Password keeps getting autlocked somehow. I haven't really been able to determine a pattern/cause.

I don't EVER want to have to type in a password to unlock 1Password. EVER. I never leave my computer unattended/unlocked and so that is good enough for me to make sure people can't get into my 1Password app...

I'm currently using Version 4.1.BETA-2 (410002). Can you recommend how to troubleshoot this? Is it a known issue?

Thanks,
Ken

  • @KenBotwinick Keep in mind that it's not possible to set it so you'll NEVER have to enter your master password. Sometimes, such as after a system restart or user log off, you will need to enter your master password.

But, if 1Password is locking all the time (when it shouldn't be) then something's obviously wrong. How often does it lock for you?

First, just double check that you have Always keep 1Password mini running checked under Preferences > General.

    Hi @JasperP,

Thanks for responding. I do have Always keep 1Password mini running checked under Preferences > General.

I've done a little testing and it seems that 1Password always locks on fast user switching. I have a personal and a work account on my mac and switch between them constantly all day. In the past, I don't remember having to unlock 1Password after every switch. Am I "mis-remembering"? :-P

    Thanks,
    Ken

  • @KenBotwinick Switching users is one of the cases where you must enter your master password in 1Password 4 (though it's apparently under consideration to make it an option).

You are correct in remembering that 1Password 3 didn't usually lock when using fast user switching. I believe that it was meant to lock, but there were some issues with it. Even though 1Password 4 locks after switching users, I'm personally finding it to work better overall with fast user switching than version 3 did.

Thanks. This definitely needs to be an option. I wouldn't have bought 1Password 4 if I knew this. It's a complete waste of time. My account is obviously safe and protected if I have to type in my password to login to it. This makes 1Password into 2Password, because of the amount of time wasted constantly typing in a second password to be able to to login to websites when I'm switching back and forth... I'll basically have to make the 1Password master password a meaningless, unsafe 1 character password to mitigate the annoyance...

  • @KenBotwinick I can see how it could be annoying if you switch users a lot - I agree that it would be nice to have it as an option.

But I would really recommend against making your master password very weak to get around this - setting it to a one character password would basically defeat the purpose of 1Password, as it wouldn't really offer any security at all. If not locking after switching users is that important to you, I would rather recommend downgrading to 1Password 3 (and hopefully they'll add this option to version 4 eventually).

    Hi @KenBotwinick,

Thanks for taking the time to write in! I'm sorry that the current configuration of 1Password is frustrating you. I have added your vote to our existing feature request.

I will echo @JasperP though, we certainly don't recommend choosing a weak Master Password to get around this. If you would prefer to use 1Password 3, I'd be happy to help you with the migration process. :)
