Can't locate my IP3 keychain

I'm on a desktop Mac running OS10.8.5.
Ive just upgraded from 1P3 to 1P4, purchasing on the App Store.
After installing, it asked for the location of the agilekeychain file, and offered three options, one of which was Dropbox.
I couldn't locate the file locally on my Mac, so chose Dropbox (which seemed up-to-date).
It wouldn't initially recognise my 1P master pwd, but after quitting and restarting, it seemed to open ok.
But it obviously hasn't found and loaded my passwords. And is completely blank.
Can you offer any advice on how I load my info into 1P4?
I've seen some threads here which seem to suggest some problem with Dropbox.
It's something I need to resolve ASAP, so any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I don't know what to make of your blank data, and I don't want to be insulting, but Dropbox uses a local folder labeled Dropbox to store the information that you sync with the Dropbox cloud service. So you always have a locally stored version of all the files that are up on Dropbox. 1Password expects you to find that local file, as you did. It saves it's changes to that same local folder, which then gets synced with Dropbox in the cloud. Dropbox makes that local file when you install it to your desktop.

So to me, it sounds like you have a blank data file, rather than the one you wanted to import. Also for me, if I look in Finder sidebar (which you might have to turn on in the View menu of Finder), I see the Dropbox folder. That's where your data ought to be sitting. After choosing Dropbox for syncing, you need to use the menu there to actually navigate to that Dropbox folder on your hard disk.

That's some advice. I'm not sure if it's all the advice you need though.

    Thanks for the advice, Hawkmoth.
If I use >file >Import from IP4, I can navigate to the existing IP3 1Password.agilekeychain file in Dropbox, but it's greyed out.
I was really hoping someone from Agilebits would respond to this question.
According to the support page, I'd get a quicker response by posting here, than contacting them direct.
    But it seems not. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

@DrStir The AgileBits support team has been super busy since the launch of 1Password 4, so it might take a little while to get a response. I'm sure they're working really hard to get caught up, and would appreciate your patience.

What happens if you navigate to your 1Password.agilekeychain file in Finder and double click on it?

Thanks Jasper. I can't locate the local keychain in Finder. Any idea where it would be lurking?

@DrStir The default location for the keychain is ~/Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain.

    You also mentioned:

If I use >file >Import from IP4, I can navigate to the existing IP3 1Password.agilekeychain file in Dropbox

Where did you navigate to find it using this method?

    I think we're talking at cross-purposes!
I can locate to the keychain file in dropbox in Finder, but it's greyed out.
I think there should be a local one - saved on my Mac, not on Dropbox - and that's the little blighter I can't find.

What happens if you just navigate to your Dropbox folder in the Finder and stop there? Don't try to pick the keychain itself. I suspect 1Password will take from there in locating your existing data. This is just a thought. I've switched to iCloud syncing, and I'm reluctant to go back and forth unless there is a good reason for me to do so.

I agree that you need attention from someone from support. Or at least someone with a deeper knowledge of the ins and outs than I have.

You're right - I need someone from AgileBit's support to help me. After all, I've paid my money for both 1P3 and 1P4. But it seems they're not interested. I've never had this kind of problem getting support from any software provider. I find it really bizarre. And extremely frustrating. :(

@DrStir I assume you that AgileBits is very interested in helping get everything working perfectly for you, but like I said they have been overwhelmed since the release of 1Password 4 and are working hard to get everyone's requests answered.

So if I understand your issue correctly now, your keychain is NOT stored in Dropbox, but rather somewhere locally? And you can't find your keychain anywhere on your Mac?

If that is correct, have you tried a spotlight search for it? Search 1Password.agilekeychain and click Show All in Finder. It's possible that you could find it that way.

Or you could maybe check 1Password 3's default location for a local data file: Home > Library > Application Support > 1Password > 1Password.agilekeychain

I'm not sure if any of that helps, but it's worth a try until someone from AgileBits is able to respond. :D

Thanks again, Jasper. I can't locate the Library folder using 1P4's file browser. I can find the keychain file if I go >Finder >Go and hold down the option key>. It's in >Library >Application Support >1Password >Backups. I guess I could copy the most recent file and put it on my desktop and browse to it that way. But it seems a clunky way of solving the problem. And I'd like to be 100% sure it's what I should be doing before going that route. Can someone at AgileBits PLEASE get back to me and provide a little HEP?????

  • Sorry that you're still having trouble. Hopefully @sjk or @Megan from AgileBits will have time to respond soon. :D

    Hi, @DrStir.

I'd like to apologize for the delay in responding here. We've been a bit overwhelmed since the launch of 1Password 4 for Mac and are all working hard to get back to our usual snappy responses.

To expedite resolving your issue through email please send a Diagnostics Report from your Mac that's having the problem; instructions are here:

Sending us your Diagnostics Report to help us help you!

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forum, but do include a link to this topic in the email so we can "connect the dots" when we receive it. Thank you!

Thanks for the response. The email with the diagnostic report is on its way.
(I forgot to include the link to this topic on the first email. So have sent a duplicate email which includes the link.)
