migrating 100 websites where already have passwords

Hi @TripleHjr,
I would like to apologize for the delay in responding to you here but we have been a bit overwhelmed since the launch of 1Password 4 for Mac. We're all working hard and putting in extra hours to get back to our usual snappy responses and we really appreciate your patience.
There are two main ways that 1Password can help you here:
- Saving your login information for all those sites that require you to sign in every time you visit, and
- Helping to generate strong passwords when you want to update your current login information or log in to a new site.
(There are plenty of other cool features, but these are probably the ones you're most anxious to get started with!)
To save your current login information for those 100s of websites in 1Password:
- Make sure that the 1Password browser extension is installed on your browser
- Visit a site and log in as normal
- 1Password will ask to save the username and password for that site (this happens most of the time, not quite always) - when you are asked to name the site, it helps to make sure the name is unique and memorable so you can find it in your list later!
Once a login is saved, all you need to do to login to that site again is: click the extension icon (looks like a key) and unlock if needed. Once unlocked you can click the item for the site, it will open the site and log you in automatically. (Please note, we're working hard so that this is as automatic as possible, but some websites don't play as nice with 1Password as others.)
You can also use 1Password to generate strong passwords for you:
- Go to the "change password" page of the website (this location depends on the way the website is set up, but it's often under the account settings section).
- When you are presented with the fields to change your password, you can click the 1Password extension, and choose the password generator (the icon that looks like a combination lock) to create a custom random strong password.
- Click the Fill button.
- After filling it on the webpage, 1Password should then prompt you to update your saved login for this site.
- If 1Password does not prompt you to update your Login, that strong password you just generated has been saved to your clipboard by default when you clicked 'Fill', so all you have to do is open your Login in 1Password and paste the new password in the appropriate field!
- Please note, that new password is also saved under your Passwords tab automatically.
I hope this helps, but if you have any further questions, we're here for you :)

Megan--thanks for that help but when you refer to "1Password extnsion" are you really referring to theMini in the top menu bar?--I don't have any "extensions" on my desktop--yes, I have downloaded the browser (Safari) extension as required--

That was a very clear, well written answer for everyone who is just starting out with 1Password as I have recently done, and the part about updating yourmweak and duplicate passwords is extremely important for those like me. I, like TripleHjr was confused by the term extensions.
I have two suggestions which I think could improve these guidelines.
Many, if not most change password pages require you to start by inputting current password; open 1password and copy current password, then when you are on the change password page on the website click in the current password box and paste current password.
I am using Mavericks, Chrome browser and it may be a bug but when I am ready to create a strong password and press fill this works fine on the website, but when I open 1Password and open edit for the site in question and select the password field and paste nothing happens. A workaround is to go to the passwords dial icon on the left side of the page, click to open passwords, open the site password that you just created and copy the passwords field, then open logins select the site we are changing, click edit, then paste the password into the password field and save.

Hi @TripleHjr and @Phillip_Wright,
The 1Password extension @Megan refers to is the 1Password component used to interact with your web browser, typically accessed by clicking its key shaped icon in the browser toolbar or using the Fill Login on current web page keyboard shortcut (Command-\ by default).
In 1Password 4, the browser extensions handle filling, submitting, and auto-saving. 1Password Mini is required to do all of the actual heavy lifting. There's a bit more related explanation in this topic:
There are also some definitions for 1Password mini and Browser extension in:
I apologize if that's more confusing than helpful. Please let me know if I can do a better job of clarifying any of it.
Regarding your two suggestions, @Phillip_Wright:
Improvements are being made to the process of using current details from an existing Login item during password and other changes on a website, then updating that Login item with those changes. For example, in 4.1 beta:
- Fixed issue when updating a login in the auto-save window, when it only updated the password. It now updates the username too.
Our documentation for site + 1P item updates is admittedly lacking; I'll see about also improving that.
If I understand correctly, you're saying this step from @Megan's instructions is failing:
- If 1Password does not prompt you to update your Login, that strong password you just generated has been saved to your clipboard by default when you clicked 'Fill', so all you have to do is open your Login in 1Password and paste the new password in the appropriate field!
You're correct about that being a bug. Are you using any clipboard manager software?
Thanks for your useful feedback!

- your understanding is correct. No clipboard manager software. If my comments are appropriate and correct, you might add my suggestions for workarounds to Megans excellent workflow for upgrading weak passwords until you get your beta finished, but maybe you have a better idea. Thanks for your quick response, things must be hectic.

Hi @Phillip_Wright,
Thanks so much for the feedback, I have updated my instructions in my notes to be more clear about extensions and added an extra step to the change passwords workflow.
Your patience is also appreciated - we hope to have this clipboard issue solved soon!
