opening new page in firefox

Hi, every time I choose a website in the password mini for opening in firefox and auto-populating the user/pw, it uses an existing page or window and looses information of the webpage that I was working on.
Also, as a secondary issue, often the user/pw does not populate. If I "refresh" the page (it still has the one password embedded in the url), it might work. Or, I have to do a command-/ ...

please advise, or refer me to existing threads, as I did not see any.
