Sync 1Password 4 on Mountain Lion with 1Password 3 on Snow Leopard

I have 1PW 4 synced between a couple of Macs running OS X 10.8.5. I also have an older iMac that cannot run an OS later than 10.6.8. It already had 1PW 3 installed and, when I check for updates, 1PW says it is up to date. I take that to mean that 1PW 4 will not run on 10.6. When I try to sync the 1PW 3 installation with either of my current vaults on Dropbox, 1PW 3 says the file is unusable.

Q: Can I run 1PW 4 on the old machine? If not, is there some way to sync 1PW 3 with a secondary vault in 1PW 4? (I understand that 1PW 3 is not going to accept multiple vaults.)

You need at least Mountain Lion for version 4. I can't answer your synch query about different versions among Macs.

    Hi @JV919,

@hawkmoth is right, 1Password 4 does require Mountain Lion to run. However, we can still keep you synced up using Dropbox.

1Password 3.9 might have trouble here, due to some sandboxing restrictions. Did you purchase 1Password 3 from the Mac App Store? If so, we'll just need to switch you over to the AgileBits website version of 1Password 3.

    It's simple:

    • Drag 1Password 3.9 to the Trash
    • Download a legacy version of 1Password 3 here: http://help.agilebits.com/1Password3/legacy_versions.html
    • Install, but don't open it yet
    • Open a Finder Window to Dropbox and find the keychain you want to open in 1Password
    • Double-click the keychain, and you should be all set up!

If this works for you, send an email in to support@ agilebits .com with your Mac App Store receipt for your 1Password purchase and we'll be happy to generate a 1Password 3 license for the webstore version. :)

I don't know what happened. I was having other problems with that account so deleted all existing accounts other than the Admin from the computer. I used Migration Assistant to copy my account from a Snow Leopard partition on an external drive that I keep only to run one program with Rosetta. After doing that I had to straighten out some mess with Dropbox and Time Machine as well as 1PW and in the midst of doing that I got the error message described above.

After I had everything else cleaned up I returned to 1Password, updated it to 3.9, and again tried to use the 1Password.agilekeychain in Dropbox. This time it returned a pane saying that 1PW 3 had to upgrade my keychain but no problem it will still be compatible with 1PW 2 (!). Not wanting to take a chance on messing up the 1PW 4 keychain in Dropbox, I copied the keychain from Dropbox to another folder, restarted 1PW, and tried again. This time I did not get the same pane; instead, 1PW worked on the first try. After a little testing I switched 1PW back to the Dropbox copy, tested again, and all seems to be well.

Thanks for responding; I'm sorry to have bothered you.
