REQ: Better handling of tags with spaces

A while back, I came across the Creative Use of Tags post and converted my tags to a similar scheme. However, I entered spaces instead of using hyphens between words in the tag names. Now this has come back to bite me.

The problem is when editing an entry and trying to enter tags, the spacebar is being used to accept the currently offered autocomplete tag, which is often not what I want. For example, I have tags named "has Address Home", "has Address Work", "has Autopay Checking", "has Autopay Visa", etc. When I type "has", it shows the autocomplete tag list with the first entry selected. When I press the spacebar to go to the next word, 1P accepts the selected entry.

IMHO, it should not behave this way. If spaces are to be allowed in the tag names, the "accept and go to next" routine should not accept the spacebar. Other applications that have tags or other delimited entries that allow spaces only will accept the Tab or Return key as selectors, which has become an unofficial UI standard.

For example, look at the Finder Tags in OS X Mavericks. Click on the Edit Tags button and type "Red". You will see that it highlights the existing Red tag. If you press Space, that Red tag is still selected but it is not chosen. If you keep typing, i.e. "Blue", then the selector changes to "Create new tag 'Red Blue'".

I hope your developers can look into this and come up with a better tag/autocomplete system. The Finder Tags is a perfect example of how it should be.

Thanks for your time and keep up the great work.

    Hi @Smudge,

Thanks so much for providing such detailed feedback here! I'm glad to hear that you've been making good use of the tagging feature in 1Password. I have passed your feedback along to our developers to see if we can't improve on this in the future to make your life a bit easier. :)

I'd like to add in my support for some fixes to the tag autocomplete feature. I use hyphens in my tags, but the same thing happens with spaces and underscores as well; All of those keys auto-fill the selected entry from the suggestion list. If you have multiple tags with a common prefix (e.g. has-*) it's a fairly substantial speed bump in the tagging workflow. Suggestion lists are traditionally passive, requiring direct action (e.g. [tab] or [carriage return]) to invoke; It feels bizarre to have one that is so forceful with its suggestions.

I found a related thread but neither one seems to be established as the canonical issue. The other one is titled Outstanding bugs with tags: display, keyboard-friendliness and auto-completion

Sorry @GeniusRedacted, there hasn't been any change to the status of this bug report. I'll make a point of reminding with the developers and try and make sure it gets some visibility. I apologise I couldn't post better news.
