Changing Master Password and now not in sync between 1P4.2 for Mac and iPhone

I am running 1P4.2 on my mac and the latest version on my iPhone syncing through Dropbox.
This setup has been running perfectly. However, I just went through the process of changing my master password on the mac and this has worked fine (including syncing to another mac that runs Lion 10.7 and can only run 1P3.8x) – all good so far.

However, I went to iPhone and can only unlock the 1P for iPhone using the old password. I went into the sync preferences, it said that Dropbox synced seconds ago. So I quit the app and "force quit" it through the app switcher home button double click trick. Still, I could only open the app using the old password.
I then created a new secure note in my mac version. I re-opened 1P on my iPhone using the old password and can see this new entry.

Have I missed something? I thought that I would need to use my new password on my iPhone app. How come I can still sync with and open and read new entries between iPhone and mac versions even though I haven't changed to the new password?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi @Danoz88,

I'm sorry your Master Password change wasn't synced the way you expected it to be. Changing it on one system/device can, and is ideally intended to, cause the change to sync to the others. However, as stated in Known Issues in 1Password 4 for Mac:

    • Changing Master Passwords do not sync to other Macs. Once you change it on one Mac, you'll need to change it manually on the other Macs.

Until our developers manage to squash this bug, if you do change your Master Password, please confirm that it has updated on all computers and devices, and change it manually if it has not. That way you won't be left wondering where it actually did and didn't get updated.

Jeff ( @jpgoldberg ) has a more detailed explanation about it here (post #24) and in the Knowledge Base post it refers to.

    I hope that helps!

The master password does not sync between devices. There's a helpful and detailed explanation here.

Thank you sjk and Stephen. I was hopeful and thought that it might be something like this.

Hmmm, so now I'm pondering over whether I keep my iOS device on my older, shorter, more easily typed on an iPhone, more familiar Master Password which I think is also pretty secure or bite the bullet and change it also over to the much longer, probably more secure version and then reinforce the habit of using the much longer password? My iOS device is also protected by remote wipe so could probably get away with a marginally less secure password...

If Jeff does get around to coming up with his explanatory diagram, it might be useful to include that or some other explanation in a help tip in the app regarding the preference setting for changing the master password. Perhaps it's a little 'Clippy'-esque but it could be like: "you're syncing your 1Password data to Dropbox / iCloud and probably between devices (**or does 1P know already that I would be syncing between devices?), please be aware of the following…"

Thanks for the suggestion, @Danoz88. I've passed that along to Jeff. :)

One possibility might be to use your "much longer, probably more secure" Master Password everywhere, in combination with Quick Unlock Code access for 1Password 4 on iOS that's discussed in these documents:

Learn about the Security Settings in 1Password

FAQs on the Security system in 1Password

During times when my Master Password becomes overly cumbersome to tap on iOS I do enable Quick Unlock Code access to get some relief from MP usage there. :)

I'm experiencing the same thing - master password does not sync from iOS device to Mac. I do find that the master password does sync between iOS devices though - is that right?

    Hi @tommunch,

Yes, changes to your Master Password should sync between your iOS devices. Ideally this change would sync across all devices, and our developers are working on making that happen just as soon as possible. :) Until that happens, you'll have to manually update your Master Password so that it is the same on your Mac as it is on your iOS devices.
