1Password 4 doesn't recognize my Vault file [moved to email]

I've been running 1Password 3 on a 2006 MacPro with Lion and a couple of other Macs. I keep the vault in Dropbox. Works great!

Now I got a new MacBook Pro, Mavericks, and bought and installed 1Password4. It can't find the vault, even when I click on it. I registered V. 4 and restarted the computer. All the "Vault" options in the 1Password Menu are grayed out. So I can't use 1Password at all.

ALSO, I don't want to screw up the existing vault for the older machines, so if v.4 modifies the Dropbox vault, I'm screwed.

Suggestions?

    Hi @jimgagne,

I'm sorry 1Password 4 on your new MacBook Pro is having trouble accessing your 1Password vault.

After installing 1Password 4 did you go through the setup procedure? If Dropbox was configured then 1Password would have tried locating your data there. Or do you want to use a separate vault for 1Password 4 that's not going to be synced with existing data in Dropbox?

It can't find the vault, even when I click on it.

Which vault are you clicking where and is there any error?

All the "Vault" options in the 1Password Menu are grayed out.

Does the 1Password 4 menu look like this?

That indicates that 1Password is locked. During the setup, did you create a new (empty) vault and assign it a Master Password?

ALSO, I don't want to screw up the existing vault for the older machines, so if v.4 modifies the Dropbox vault, I'm screwed.

If 1Password on those other machines is creating automatic backups there should be no reason for concern since you'd have one to restore from if necessary.

If you have a 1Password 4 vault you can't unlock that's empty, or doesn't have any data you want to keep, then the easiest thing to do would be to start over from scratch. The starting over guide explains how to do that. Then you can go through the setup procedure, either creating a new, empty vault with a memorable Master Password or by syncing with your existing 1Password data in Dropbox.

Please let us know if that doesn't help and you need further assistance getting this sorted out. Thanks!

THANKS for your help. I went through the "starting over guide" and renamed the three files in ~/Library as described. (I bought the program from you, and there's nothing of yours in ~/Library/Containers OR /Library/Application Support.) Same result: No setup dialog ever occurred. I've never been asked about a vault. YES, the 1Password 4 menu looks just like that. That's how the program comes up every time no matter what I do. NOTE: I copied a LOT of stuff from my old Mac to this one, so it's possible there's more stuff somewhere I need to delete.

ALSO: if 1Password 4 modifies the vault in Dropbox, does that mean I can't use the same vault in 1Password 3 (on a Lion machine too old to upgrade)? I can easily back it up. I've looked all over your description of the new version, and there's no mention of backwards vault compatibility.

ALSO: I never activated 1Password mini. I clicked on "Change Master Password" in Preferences/Security, and I got an error message: "Not a primary vault. Cannot change master password when a secondary vault is active. Please switch to a primary vault." Of course, there's no way to do that.

ALSO: I made a copy of the vault from Dropbox to my desktop. Double-clicking on it or dragging it to the 1Password 4 icon in the dock had NO effect, although there was a brief pause like something was going to happen. Never did. No error. If 1Password isn't open, double-clicking on the vault opens 1Password, and that's it. Same result if I double-click on the version in Dropbox.

    Hi @jimgagne,

I'm sorry you're still having trouble getting 1Password 4 configured properly on your MacBook Pro. To get this resolved we'd now like to help you directly in email. To get that started, please send us a Diagnostics Report from your MacBook Pro, along with a link to this topic, to support+forum@agilebits.com. A brief comment here mentioning that you've sent the report would also be helpful. Thanks in advance!

if 1Password 4 modifies the vault in Dropbox, does that mean I can't use the same vault in 1Password 3 (on a Lion machine too old to upgrade)?

Dropbox syncing of your 1Password data between 1Password 3 and 1Password 4 will work just fine.
