How sync 1Password 3 for iOS to 1Password 4 for Mac?

I have 1Password for iPad 3.7.2.

Now I need to export all the data to the new 1Password Version 4.1.2 (412009) in my Mac, but one of the options in 1Password 4 (login as an existing user) work. What can I do?

Thanks.

I mean NONE of the options work...

  • Hi @Rodolfo,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience here! Unfortunately, Dropbox discontinued the API used by 1Password 3 for iOS after it was removed from the App Store in 2012. We’d like to update 1Password 3 for iOS, but we can’t since it was removed. Apps removed from sale can no longer be updated. And as a small team we need to focus our development efforts on making the current versions of 1Password even better.

Wifi sync was completely re-written in version 4, so you must have the same version of 1Password installed on both your Mac and your iOS device to be able to sync using wifi (either v3 to v3, or v4 to v4).

However, if you don't want to (or can't) upgrade to 1Password 4 for iOS, you can use 1Password 3 for Mac as an intermediary between version 3 on iOS and version 4 on Mac. This means you'll open 1Password 3 for Mac to do a sync with the iOS app, then the changes will automatically sync between the two Mac versions.

If you're interested in doing this, here's how:

    • First, you will need to download 1Password 3 for Mac again if you no longer have it.

      • It's available for download here.
      • If you are a Mac App Store customer, and need a license key for version 3, please send a copy of your Mac App Store receipt to support+sales@agilebits.com and we'll be happy to give you one.
    • Next, you need to setup sync between version 3 and version 4 on your Mac.

      • Setup Dropbox or local folder sync in 1Password 4 for Mac (if you haven't already).
      • Open 1Password 3 and select the .agilekeychain file that you created above when setting up Dropbox or folder sync.
    • Now you're set to sync 1Password 3 for Mac with 1Password 3 for iOS, and have the changes sync to 1Password 4 for Mac.

Please let us know if you have any questions. :)

Hi Jasper, thanks for the quick answer.

Let me explain you the issues I have when following your instructions:

I downloaded 1Password 3. The Welcome window in 1Password 3 offers two options: (i) New data file or (ii) Find existing. Option (ii) requires a data file which I do not have. Option (i) asks for a new master password which I guess I do not need. Please advise how to proceed here.

    >" If you are a Mac App Store customer, and need a license key for version 3, please send a copy of your Mac App Store receipt to support+sales@agilebits.com and we'll be happy to give you one."

I do not know if I need the licence key for the downloaded version 3. It seems to work without the licence key. Please advise.

"Next, you need to setup sync between version 3 and version 4 on your Mac".

"Setup Dropbox or local folder sync in 1Password 4 for Mac (if you haven't already)".

"Open 1Password 3 and select the .agilekeychain file that you created above when setting up Dropbox or folder sync."_

Problem here is that when I open 1Password 4 the Welcome window again offers two options: (i) New in 1Password (I guess I am not since I have 1Password in my IOS device) (ii) Already used 1Password. When I go to (ii) and select Dropbox I am asked to select a 1Password vault in Dropbox but how do I create the .agilekeychain file? What should I do here?

    Looking forward to your reply.

  • Hi @Rodolfo,

First, please open 1Password 4 and select that you are a new user to create a new data file. Then, setup folder sync.

Next, open 1Password 3 for Mac and choose find existing data (the .agilekeychain folder synced with 1Password 4).

Then, sync 1Password 3 for iOS with 1Password 3 for Mac using wifi sync.

The data should then sync to 1Password 4 for Mac. :)

I do not know if I need the licence key for the downloaded version 3. It seems to work without the licence key. Please advise.

There's a 30 day free trial, so you will eventually need a license.

Please let me know if you have any questions. :)

    Hi Jasper,

    Thanks for the clear instructions.

I have just sent an email to sales@agilebits.com and to support@agilebits.com with a copy of my Mac App Store receipt of 1Password 4 in request of a license key for version 3.

I will come back once I get the license and (hopefully) sync!

    Rgds.

  • Hi @Rodolfo,

I just found your email, and have sent you a version 3 license key. Please let us know if you have any other questions! :)
