Opening an old vault file [moved to email]
Hi
I forgot my Master Password (after having to shut a newly installed system down for several weeks due to renovations!). Fortunately there was only one item in the vault and so I could just recreate the vault and carry on. I am curious, though, as to what the item in the vault was. I vaguely remember the password, though it seems not exactly. I followed the instructions to start again by renaming the Library folder to _OLD, and so have it still, is it possible to re-open this vault somehow so I can try and remember the password and see my contents? I can't see this option anywhere, only to create a new vault, not re-open, or import an old vault?
If not, is there anyway to see the name of the item in the old vault or a clue as to what I had in the vault (i don't need any saved passwords etc, Im just curious as to what I saved in there!)
Cheers

The only way you will be able to open the old vault will be with the old master password, I'm afraid. Did you have a hint for it? If so and you enter the password wrongly a few times you should see that hint, which may help.

hi stephen
yes, I guessed that would be the case. What I want to do though is open the old vault, but whilst 1Password is using another vault, does that make sense? i.e: i have 1Password running with a vault that I created and am currently using (I know the master password this time!) and I want to add my old vault to 1Password and see if, over time, I can remember the exact syntax of the password. I can see in the menu's how i can add another vault to my existing vault, however this creates a blank vault, rather than allowing me to open the existing vault. Can I create a new blank vault and replace the contents of the folder in the file system with the contents of the old vault?

I don't believe you can add an old vault (i.e., one created with a previous master password) to your existing vault. If there is a backup in the old folder I suspect that you'll probably be prompted for the old master password if you try to restore it to your new vault.
In any event, as I'm not quite sure of the best way of accessing your old vault I suggest not doing anything with it until someone more expert than me comes along. This is probably for @sjk or @Megan.

Hi @SockThief,
I'd be glad to help you with temporarily accessing your old vault so you can try unlocking it again. To do that, please send us a Diagnostics Report from your Mac, along with a link to this topic and your forum username, to support+forum@agilebits.com. A brief comment here mentioning that you've sent the report would also be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hi sjk, whilst im perfectly happy to send a diag report (i had a request to do so in another topic) im not sure how that helps in this situation?

Hi @SockThief,
The report will help us to provide you with specific instructions for what you'd like to do relative to your current 1Password configuration.

hi SJK
please let me know what information you require, and ill be happy to provide it, I don't feel a full diag report is required in this instance,as it contains a lot of data that is both irrelevant and can be considered private.
If I was having issues achieving what you instruct, then i would understand the need, however merely opening an exisiting data file should be a straight forward operation.

Hi @SockThief,
It's fine to email us without the report (otherwise the same instructions as in #5) and we'll help you get this sorted out. :)
