5-Person Family License vs. App Store Multi-User License: Color Me Confused!
A friend of mine is fortunate to have a lovely wife and three beautiful daughters… After much cajoling and a recent password nightmare when I was working on their family iMac I finally convinced them to purchase 1Password via the App Store.
I recommended the App Store because it is less expensive than the Family License on the Agilebits store. As I understand it, App Store licenses cover all users using a single Mac. So why would someone need to purchase a Family License? Is there a downside to the multi-user App Store license vs. the Family License? Did I steer them wrong and, if so, (depending on the answer I get here…) will they be able to upgrade to the Family License now or in the future at the half-price cost? (They purchased 1Password during the previous half-off sale.)

Hi @MrMojoOne,
The Mac App Store version of 1Password can be used on any Macs authorized using the purchaser's Apple ID. As long as that is not a problem for them, purchasing through the Mac App Store will be just fine.
Please let us know if you have any other questions. We're always here to help! :)

Jasper, exactly what does "any Macs authorized using the purchaser's Apple ID" mean? And why might that be a problem for them? For example, could there be a problem in the future if the family purchases a second Mac (a likely occurrence when the oldest daughter approaches graduation from high school…)?

If you sign into the Mac App Store using the same Apple ID (Apple account) that was used to purchase 1Password, then you can install 1Password on that Mac. As long as they are fine logging into the Mac App Store with that Apple ID on all their Macs, there won't be any problems.
