Multiple vault sync question -- pointing iOS at secondary vault

Hello -- I have a family license. I'm running 1Password (4.2.2) on my Mac, and the iOS app on my iPhone (4.3.2). I have a primary vault, which I use in both places. I have also just set up three secondary vaults:

  • one for my wife (which she wants to use on her Mac). This seems fine, no problems so far. Her Mac is meant to point to secondary vault #1.
  • one each for my kids (to be used on their iPads). These are the issue. I want them each to point to their own secondary vault (#2 and #3, respectively).

I know from a comment Megan made on another thread (http://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/18639/multiple-vault-sync-with-dropbox-not-yet-available-coming-in-an-update-soon) that it's possible to have the iOS app point to a non-primary vault. ("Our support team can help the iOS see a secondary vault instead of the primary.")

How would I go about this? I've installed the iOS app on both iPads. I need to know how to point iPad #1 to secondary vault #2, and iPad #2 to secondary vault #3.

Thank you!

The team have submitted a version that will work with multiple vaults to Apple. Its only a matter of time before you will have the ability. So It could be really soon and you would not need to go to all that work.

If however you need access now I would recommend that you send in a support email to support@agilebits.com and let them help you one on one. It many need more details than normal and specifics can be discussed in those emails.

Following the update I can add a non-primary vault to my son's iOS device. That's great.

However, is there a way to have an iOS device point ONLY to this non-primary vault, and NOT to default to show its own "Primary" when the iOS app is opened? The "Primary" in question is empty, since we want him ONLY to be working in the (shared) non-primary vault. Thanks!

    Hi @michuser49‌

I'm glad that the multiple vault iOS update has been helping you at least a bit so far! Unfortunately, at this time 1Password is only looking for keychains with the default "1Password.agilekeychain" name on the initial set-up, so it will be unable to find a secondary vault until a 'primary' has been installed.

This is a limitation that our developers are working to change as soon as possible. We've heard from many users with situations similar to your own, and we'll do our best to give 1Password some extra flexibility here soon.

In the meantime, the set-up that you have, with the empty primary and your son's data in the secondary vault is the best workaround. I do apologize for the inconvenience!

May I add my voice for the addition of this feature, and quickly. It is very frustrating that my daughter can sync to her 'sub vault' on her Mac, but not on iOS. I thought that was the whole point of your recent update? Damned annoying.

  • Hi @pincomar,

The primary vault must be named 1Password.agilekeychain currently. Sorry for any inconvenience!

Thanks for the feedback about this! I'll pass it along to the developers. :)

I was having the same problem, and hopefully I might be able to help a little. First off, my setup is similar, only with my Parents. I personally have all "my" stuff in a personal vault, and I created secondary vaults for my parents that sync through their Dropbox account (then shared to me) Everything seemed great until I realized the iOS app would always open up an an empty vault, forcing them to switch to the "secondary vault."

The solution I had was simply naming all the vaults to the default 1Password.agilekeychain. The iOS app sees it as a primary vault and is able to set it up that way, while my Mac app is able to add it as a secondary vault. Since all the vaults are in separate folders, it was not an issue. The only problem is with my iOS devices, I am unable to name the vaults, so they all just show up as "1Password" This seems to be working for me now, but I don't know if it will continue to. This truly is getting extremely frustrating, I don't know why this is so hard to get right.

I have a primary and it appears all my information is in the secondary... Would it be possible to just copy the data file into the primary??

    Hi Seth,

Again, I'm so sorry for the trouble that this is causing you. Our developers are looking into options to make multiple vaults even more flexible and user-friendly. Your feedback on how you are using 1Password and multiple vaults is much appreciated!

    Hi @mrmark‌,

In order to get this sorted out, I'll need to know a little bit more about your 1Password ecosystem:

    • What are the version numbers of 1Password and your operating system for all computers and devices running 1Password?
    • What are you using to keep things in sync?
    • Do you currently use the multiple vaults feature?

The more detail you can provide, the more quickly we'll be able to get you sorted out! :)

I am using v4.5.1 on the iphone and 1.0.9.340 on the windows desktop and use dropbox to sync. Now desktop is fine but phone has two choices for sync first is Primary and second is 1 password 2.. so in order to use 1 pass program I have to go to sync and select vault everytime I use program... is that correct method.. maybe there is a way to move files all to one location so there is only one vault

    Hi @mrmark,

Thanks for getting back to me with that information. One final question: is the vault that you are using on Windows (the vault that has all your data in it) named 1Password.agilekeychain? Or have you given it a custom name?

If you have given it a custom name, as the thread above states, you can only install it on iOS as a secondary vault at this time. However, if it is named 1Password.agilekeychain, we should be able to get it installed as your primary vault on iOS.

Assuming that your keychain is named 1Password.agilekeychain, that you only currently use the one vault, and that your data is correct and up-to-date on your Windows machine, please follow these steps:

    • In 1Password for Windows, go to Preferences > General and determine what the file location of your keychain is.

    • On your iOS devices, open 1Password 4 for iOS, tap Settings > Vaults > 1Password (assuming secondary is named 1Password)

    • Tap the circled i next to the secondary vault to view the details, then tap Remove Vault.

    • Go back into the primary and re-enable Dropbox sync. If there are multiple 1Password.agilekeychain files available, ensure that you choose the 1Password.agilekeychain that 1Password for Windows is currently syncing to (as determined above)

This should get everything working properly. If you hit any snags, please let me know where things got tangled and we'll go from there. :)
