1Password free or not?

I'm a newbie to 1password for Mac. I have downloaded it for free, yet some sites put a price on it. Are there 2 versions? Is the free download less effective than the paid version?

Also, when I have entered login details for a site with an existing password, do I then change it to a 1Password generated one, and if so, how? When I click on the existing password in 1Password it only gives an option to 'copy'
Thanks!

Mac OS 10.9.2

  • Hi @givepollyacracker,

We have a 30 day free trial available, which is most likely what you downloaded. If you'd like to purchase 1Password, you can do so at our store: https://agilebits.com/store

Oh ok, thanks. But I didn't realise the download was a 30 day trial so I have set it up with all my passwords etc. Then I went a bought 1Password via iTunes. How do I migrate all my saved data to the paid version? Do I then trash the first, trial version? Thanks.

In order to migrate from the AgileBits store version to the Mac App Store version you can follow the steps set out in this knowledge base article. (Even though it refers to moving from the beta to the Mac App Store version it still applies to what you want to do because the beta is effectively an AgileBits store version.)

Thanks for that. I've done all that but now can't tell which copy was the 30-day trial one and which is the one I paid for and downloaded from iTunes!
    Are they both 1Password mini?
When I identify the versions I should trash the earlier 30-day trial one, yes? Also do I check box for 'keep 1Password Mini running'?
Is there a way your replies can also be forwarded to my inbox so that I don't have to keep signing in to get my replies?...as long as my email address won't show on your site!

Let's take this slowly! Go to your applications folder. You'll probably have in it two 1Password applications. One will be 1Password 4.app and one will be 1Password.app (you may not see the ".app" extension if your Finder preferences are not to show file extensions). Note one application name has a "4" at the end and the other does not.

Launch the 1Password application by double-clicking on that name. Does it contain your saved items? If so, you've saved them into the Mac App Store version. Now press control + cmd + Q to quit 1Password and close 1P Mini at the same time.

Now go back to your applications folder and launch the 1Password 4 application. Does it contain any items you saved? (You're looking at the AgileBits store version now.) Again press control + cmd + Q to quit that version of 1Password and close 1P Mini at the same time.

You should now know which version contains your information—and thus which version you wish to keep. You will also have made sure you don't have 1P Mini left running from either version. (It's not good to have two versions of 1P Mini running at the same time.) Now re-launch whichever version contains your saved information, go to 1P4 > Preferences > General and make sure you have a tick in the check box beside Always keep 1Password mini running.

    You should now:

    1. know which version you want to run (i.e., the one with your saved information);
    2. be able to run that version without interference from the other one!

Once that's done we can go ahead with anything else necessary (like getting rid of the other version).

If you click on the star at the top right of this thread that will bookmark the thread for you. Then go to your forum profile, edit it and ensure your notification preferences include the option to email you when people comment on a thread you have bookmarked. That answers your last question.
