What is the reason for a separate entry for generated passwords?

I have noticed since a few weeks that, when I create for example a new login entry, and use the "generate password" feature, I end up with 2 entries with the same title, one being the login entry, which contains both the username and the password, and the second one being a generated password entry, containing only the password.
What is the purpose of creating this separate generated password entry? Should I keep it, or can I delete it?

Generated passwords stored in the Passwords category are those not specifically linked to a saved login. You can clear duplicate passwords from the Passwords category by going to 1P4 > Help > Tools > Remove Redundant Generated Passwords.

I am glad I posted this question, as it allowed me to realise I didn't have the latest version of 1Password on my Mac, I was still using the 3.8 version.
I upgraded to version 4, and I don't have this separate password entry created anymore!
    Thanks Stephen for your answer.

    Tip from way back ;)
