Devices out of sync with iCloud [Resolved, see steps in Post #2]

Hi -

I have an iMac with 1P v4.4, and an iPad and iPhone with v4.5.1. Syncing is set-up using iCloud but my devices are out of sync. iMac has 482 items. iPad has 490 items. iPhone as 489 items. Each device says that they are up-to-date. Synching does not fail or throw any errors, yet I keep having these differences. I also notice password differences between one specific record on my Mac (updated last week) which has not synched to my iPad. In other words, I know for a fact that the password on the Mac is correct, and incorrect on the iPad.

So, assuming that my iPad was wrong, I disabled iCloud sync, and erased all data. Restarted 1P and re-enabled iCloud synch. After a few seconds the iPad shows again 490 items, and is therefore still out of synch with the iMac.

Any guidance how I could resolve these sync issues?

Thanks,
Ronald

Hello Ronald, and thanks for taking the time to write in. It sounds like you did everything correct to get your setup reset with one crucial exception: you didn't erase your 1Password data on your iOS devices first.

Here's what I'd like you try:

    1. On your iOS devices, open 1Password 4 for iOS, tap Settings > Sync > Sync Service and choose 'Disable Sync'.
    2. Go to Settings > Advanced > Erase Data and do so.
    3. On your Mac, open 1Password 4 for Mac, and click the 1Password menu, then Preferences. Click Sync, and click Change syncing.
    4. Check the box to remove the data from iCloud and confirm that you want to disable sync.
    5. Restart the Mac and iOS devices.
    6. On the Mac, go back to the Sync preferences, and setup iCloud syncing again.
    7. Go back into the iOS app and set it up with iCloud sync. That should get everything on the same page for sure.

Let me know how this works out for you and if there's anything else I can do to help. Thanks for being a 1Password customer!

Did everything on the reply still a no go.
Between steps 5 & 6 on the mac the first time it said it wanted to merge data. And that did not fix the sync. So I started over and after 5 I wen to the
    Apple - system preferences
    iCloud box
    Hit manage
Scroll down to one password (funny that there was still info there even though we checked the box to delete it)
    Delete the documents & data
Now go on to 6 and so on.

My original issue was that the mac and Iphone communicated no issues, my iPad had an older list and would not sync new stuff. Problem solved after adding my 5.5 step.

I keep having the same problem syncing between my Macs and iOS devices. I consider my MBP to be the "reference" device with the correct database, and I always end up with extra items on my other devices, particularly the iOS ones. I have followed the instructions above, which only temporarily fix the problem, as it always reappears. I have tried syncing from my MBP to an iOS device via wifi, and that still doesn't solve the problem. Why does this continue to happen? Is this a problem with the way iCloud syncs, or a problem with how 1P manages the database? What can I do to prevent this problem from reappearing?

    Hi @Drdul,

I'm sorry to hear that sync is misbehaving for you! We'll need to take a closer look at your system here to determine where things are getting tangled up. Could you please send us a Diagnostics Report from your Mac and iOS devices?

    http://learn2.agilebits.com/1Password4/diagnostic-report.html

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@ agilebits .com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

A short note here once you've sent the Report in will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Megan,
I also had problems with iCloud sync; although 1Password (OSX, v4.4) claimed it had synced, some entries would not sync between iMac and Macbook.
My iCloud account is under xxx@me.com but it is connected to my Apple ID (different email address).
After some analysis I noticed I was using a different icloud login on iMac and Macbook (on one I used the me.com, on the other my Apple ID).
Although I had no problems with other content in iCloud, for 1Password this apparently caused problems.
Maybe others have similar setup and this is the cause of their problems.

  • Hi @Heino,

That's correct, you need to be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID on all devices.

I'm glad to hear you were able to get syncing fixed. Please let us know if you have any other questions. We're always happy to help! :)

I tried the steps above on my MacPro and I don't have steps 3 and 4 and don't see the box to remove the data from iCloud. When I try to sync to any other destination I get a sound and the error message. 1Password V4.4 All my other devices seem to be working okay.

    Hi Richard,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble here. If you are unable to turn off iCloud syncing, it sounds to me like sync is not fully set up. Could you take a screenshot of your Preferences > Sync screen so that I can get a better idea of where you're at? There are instructions on how to take a screenshot here: http://take-a-screenshot.org/. You can save the image to a service like Dropbox and include a link in your reply, or simply use the 'Attach a File' option below the comment pane.

Once we know a bit more about your situation, we should be able to get you sorted out in no time. :)

Lost my syncing between macbook ipad and iphone via icloud sync

    What I did

    • Changed my icloud password
    • Update my icloud password on iphone and ipad
    • Changed my 1password master password on my mac

    What happened

    • ipad and iphone still accepting old 1password master password
    • manually sync with icloud via 1password app
    • observe that it isn't actually syncing and 1password still takes the old master password
    What did the trick
    • switch to dropbox sync but cancel out before actually setting it up
    • did the same on my other device
    • after changing my sync back to icloud on both devices I was prompted for my password, entered my new updated password, success

But, I feel that 1password should be able to detect that the master password has been changed after a failed sync attempt with the old password and given a hint somehow that the upstream password database password has changed and block access to the password file on the local store. Think of the situation where my phone was stolen and the person who has my phone also has my old password. I don't want to have to change ALL of my passwords because I know he can still see the old passwords.

in any event switching between dropbox and icloud seems to trick it.

    Hi @brokenpipe,

Thanks so much for providing such a detailed outline of your steps. Sounds like you changed a few things at once there, I wonder if the issue with sync is the reason that your Master Password didn't immediately sync.

In any case, I'm glad you managed to get things sorted out. If you hit any further snags, do let us know! We're here for you.

You essentially released software that cannot sync with iCloud unless you have software that hasn't been released yet. 10.10 isn't available. This is a pretty huge failure.

Same for myself iCloud sync simply not working. Disappointed as it used to very frustrating at the least.

I concur - syncing with iCloud flat out doesn't work and I'm not going through these machinations just to get it to work. I have to manually align iPhone, iPad and Macs and that's just plain ridiculous and am not doing it anymore.

The steps in the second post by @MrRooni‌ worked for me. iCloud sync + mac app store version of 1password on Mac and iPhone.
