How does sync actually work?

There is a lot of information on how to sync databases in the knowledgebase, tutorials, and forums but I have been unable to find a more detailed description of what actually gets synced and how it happens. Is the most recent version of the entire database copied to all devices or are only new or changed records within the database updated in all copies? What happens if you make different changes to the database on different devices and then sync?

    Hi @rick_b,

    Good question.

Is the most recent version of the entire database copied to all devices or are only new or changed records within the database updated in all copies?

After the initial sync, only your changes are updated. This keeps sync smaller and faster. :)

What happens if you make different changes to the database on different devices and then sync?

1Password does its best to manage conflicts if you make changes to the same entry on different devices. If it can determine which change is newer, that data will have priority. If 1Password is unable to determine which change is newer, both changes will be saved - one change will be in a 'Conflict' section. This ensures that data is not lost, and you can edit the entry to put the accurate information where it needs to be.
