Mini Steals Safari Extension Shortcut

I've searched and googled but didn't see anything on this. New MacBookPro, installed 1Password 4.4 and then the Safari Extension 4.2.1. The "Fill Password on current web page" setting in 1P is set to the normal command-backslash shortcut. However, when I'm in Safari and use that shortcut, 1Password Mini opens instead. The Safari extension works correctly otherwise if I open it with a mouse click.

I've searched through every preference and setting I can find but I can't figure it out. Have I missed something?

    Hi @PatrickW,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble here. Let's try this:

    • Open 1Password.
    • Click the 1Password menu, hold down the Control key, and select Quit 1Password and 1Password mini.
    • Restart the Mac.
    • Relaunch 1Password.

Does this get your extension behaving any better?

@Megan‌ Unfortunately not, I'm still seeing the same behavior. Command-Backslash still opens 1Password Mini.

    Hi @PatrickW,

Let's try reinstalling the 1Password 4 browser extension for Safari.

    Please follow these steps:

    • Open Safari.
    • Click Safari > Preferences in the menu bar.
    • Click the Extensions tab.
    • Click "Uninstall" for the 1Password 4 extension.
    • Restart your Mac.
    • Launch Safari and visit the following page: https://agilebits.com/browsers/index.html
    • Click the big green button, and follow the instructions on the new page to install the extension.

Hi @Megan, I followed those steps but still no luck.

I've noticed that Mini only steals the command-backslash while Safari is the active window. If Safari is hidden, Mini doesn't respond to the shortcut. I just installed Chrome and its 1P extension as well, with the same results. On the plus side, 1P Mini is correctly filling in my credentials on the web page.

I note that cmd-\ is defined in the Preferences as "fill login on current page". No specific mention of whether it does this via the extension or via 1PW Mini. For me it uses Mini, whether the browser is Safari or Firefox.

    Hi @PatrickW (and @danco ),

It appears I may have been giving you some incorrect advice, and I am sorry. I am sure that I remembered that ⌘\ used to activate the browser extension and not the Mini, but it seems I may have been wrong. (Perhaps it is because my browser is organized in such a way that the browser extension and Mini open in nearly the same spot anyway and I wasn't paying close enough attention to notice.) After confirming with a few colleagues, it has been determined that ⌘\ should always trigger the Mini. The browser extension will open only if you click directly on the key icon.

I apologize for the confusion here. As long as your details are being filled correctly, I think we can consider this sorted out ... but if you have any further questions, we'd be happy to help!

Hi @Megan, so I started to reach the same conclusion. I think I'd also got so used to having the browser extension to the right of the Safari address bar that when I got the new machine with the extension positioned to the left of the bar, it seemed like something was amiss. Sorry to waste everyone's time! :\">

    Hi @PatrickW,

No apologies needed! I wish I would have caught on to this earlier and not wasted your time with all those fix steps - thanks for your understanding. :)

    Hi Jim,

In 1Password 4 we have moved all of the processing power for the browser extension into the Mini. Mini is even responsible for drawing the extension pop-up on your screen. All that the browser extension does is the actual filling. Since we know where the key icon in the menu bar is, it's easy to draw the pop-up just below this, but we don't know where the browser extension icon is, unless you access it directly by clicking it.

I hope this helps to explain things, but we're here if you have any further questions!
