An extra Safari session is opened [resolved by removing "Duplicate Tab Button" extension]

When I log into a site while Safari is closed, 1Password (v.4) always opens two tabs, the 1st is the home page of Safari and the 2nd is the site being logged into. This odd behavior began when I upgraded from 1PW v.3 to v.4. (When Safari is already open, 1PW behaves normally and opens only one new tab for the login.) What might explain the extra opening of the extra session of Safari, in the 1st tab?

    Hi @Guffee,

Could you take a peek in Safari's Preferences > General and let me know what your 'New windows open with' setting is?

Well, Megan, my 'New windows open with' was set to 'Homepage', so I changed it to 'Empty Page' and that solved the problem with 1Password. Thank you! However, I've always had it set to 'Homepage' in the past without this problem, using 1PW v.3; and my Macbook laptop still has it set to 'Homepage' and it doesn't have this problem. I wonder why my iMac computer had this problem and not my Macbook. Also, now that I've set it to 'Empty Page, could I encounter any "downside" to that setting? (I don't know the differences for that setting, I admit. It's the default for installing OS X and I've never questioned it or changed it.)

    Hi @Guffee,

Thanks for checking that for me! I've been talking with a colleague about this, as it seems strange that your two computers might be behaving differently, and there's one more thing I'd like you to look into.

In the 1Password Mini, please click on the 1Password icon next to the Search field (or gear icon if you have multiple vaults enabled) to bring up the settings menu. Do both computers have the same setting for opening new URLs?

The actual setting itself is less important than if they are the same - you can select which ever one you prefer. If they're different, this could be why you're seeing different behaviour on each machine.

Also, now that I've set it to 'Empty Page, could I encounter any "downside" to that setting?

There really is no downside here, it comes down to personal preference: do you want Safari to open to a particular page, or to a blank page? I just wanted to see if you were getting that second page opening because you had asked Safari to open with a particular page.

Hello, Megan. I checked and both computers, in 1Password Mini, are set the same, as you show above: "Open URLs in New Tab". So, no soap. I've set my Safari Preferences back so that 'New windows open with' is set to 'Homepage', because I sure don't like Safari opening to a blank page. So I'm still stuck with 1Password opening an extra Safari tab before it logs in somewhere in a 2nd tab.

Incidentally (and this may be the wrong place to ask--if so, please tell me where to post it) I've wanted to send you and others an attachment over the years but have never been able to. When I click on this forum's 'Attach a file' the little progress wheel just spins forever. Any suggestion?

    Hi @Guffee,

This is strange. If you'd like us to investigate a bit further, we'll need to take a closer look at your system here to determine where things are getting tangled up. Could you please send us a Diagnostics Report?

I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report from your Mac:
    http://learn2.agilebits.com/1Password4/diagnostic-report.html#mac4

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support@agilebits.com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

A short note here once you've sent the Report in will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

When I click on this forum's 'Attach a file' the little progress wheel just spins forever. Any suggestion?

Have you tried dragging and dropping attachments? You can also save your file to an image service like Dropbox and attach your image inline by using the image icon in the comment menu bar:

Simply click on it and insert the image's URL.

Hi, again, Megan. The problem with an extra Safari tab opening has been resolved. Laura emailed me that apparently a Safari extension of mine didn't coexist with 1Password 4, and she was right. So I got rid of the extension as it was quite unnecessary. Problem resolved :)

Thanks for advising me how to send an attachment by simply dragging & dropping it. I tried it just now (with a picture of a waterfall) but it didn't work. I was going to try Dropbox (which we use all the time) next, but first I tried you built-in "Attach a file" and--it worked! First time ever for me. So, well, the next time I really want to send an attachment, I'll try the forum's built-in button first, and if that doesn't work I'll try a link via Dropbox. Thank you very much!

P.S. -- That's Wailua Falls in Hawaii, on the island of Kauai. I took the photo myself. And it wasn't easy! :)

    Hi @‌Guffee,

That does look like a rather precarious angle! Hawaii is definitely on my travel adventures wish list.
