Dropbox sync between 1Password 3 for iOS and 1Password 4 for Mac [not possible due to API change]
I have 1password 3.7.2 on my ipad and 4.4.1 in my Mac and I just can't believe that the only way I can sync is if I buy version 4 for the ipad for $17.99 dollars. I just can't believe it. I might be wrong and I will be great full for the help. I understand that Dropbox changed the IPI and I understand that one can do it with iCloud and the other with wifi but what I can't understand is why there is no way I can do this manually. I need this one time , maybe one time per month.
Please tell me I'm wrong.
Thanks

Hi @eduardohers,
I'm sorry for the inconvenience here! Unfortunately, Dropbox discontinued the API used by 1Password 3 for iOS after it was removed from the App Store in 2012. We’d like to update 1Password 3 for iOS, but we can’t since it was removed. Apps removed from sale can no longer be updated. And as a small team we need to focus our development efforts on making the current versions of 1Password even better.
iCloud sync is not an option in version 3 (it was first added in version 4).
That leaves Wi-Fi sync, which still works. However, Wi-Fi sync was completely re-written in version 4, so you must have the same version of 1Password installed on both your Mac and your iOS device to be able to sync using wifi (either v3 to v3, or v4 to v4).
But, if you don't want to (or can't) upgrade to 1Password 4 for iOS, you can use 1Password 3 for Mac as an intermediary between version 3 on iOS and version 4 on Mac. This means you'll open 1Password 3 for Mac to do a sync with the iOS app, then the changes will automatically sync between the two Mac versions.
If you're interested in doing this, here's how:
First, you will need to download 1Password 3 for Mac again if you no longer have it.
- It's available for download here.
- If you are a Mac App Store customer, and need a license key for version 3, please send a copy of your Mac App Store receipt to support+sales@agilebits.com and we'll be happy to give you one.
Next, you need to setup sync between version 3 and version 4 on your Mac.
- Setup Dropbox or local folder sync in 1Password 4 for Mac (if you haven't already).
- Open 1Password 3 and select the .agilekeychain file that you created above when setting up Dropbox or folder sync.
Now you're set to sync 1Password 3 for Mac with 1Password 3 for iOS, and have the changes sync to 1Password 4 for Mac.
Please let us know if you have any questions. :)

I understand the fact that Dropbox decided to change the API and that you can't change the old app. What I can't understand is why you guys did not make it easier for a customer like me that spent 49 dollars for version 2 I believe then upgraded to 3 and now has to pay another 17.99 just to have the app running in a reasonable way. What you suggest to me , to have version 3 installed just to be a bridge to the iPad 3 version is not a reasonable solution.
As a customer I feel left out and I'm not happy.
If Dropbox changed the API , so,understanding you do not have any control at least you should make sure your customers are taking care of. If I want to upgrade to version 4 like I did on my Mac I can. But if I don't want or can i should have a solution that is reasonable and easy to keep using your product. At the moment I can't do that.
The best solution for Agilebits is not ,and I repeat is not a good solution for your customers. The fact that you are a small team is actually a sign and I incentive to keep your customers that are or at least where happy.
I'm not at the moment.
Your only solution is not something I'm willing to do.
Every company has to make business decisions to keep making money. But in this case I believe you guys made the wrong one.
Thanks for responding and trying to find a solution though. But I have to say this is wrong and you guys did the wrong decision choosing to charge 17.99 and letting old customers to feel obligated to upgrade or loose the service. granted that if I install a Oder version in my laptop and provide you with my receipts you will be nice enough and provide me with a license to make the application to run. Then I have to read and troubleshoot an unreliable method of connecting with wifi and hope I have a solution for a problem that I was not suppose to have.
Blaming Dropbox is not the way to go. Granted that they are not suppose to change the sync API like that.
We'll anyway I will not do all this to keep this working and unfortunately will have to say goodbye to this app if there is no other way.

Hi @eduardohers,
I sincerely apologize for your frustration here. Your feedback is much appreciated.
I just wanted to let you know that 1Password 4 for iOS is currently on sale! You can now snag 1Password 4 for iOS from the iOS App Store for $9.99. I hope this makes the decision to upgrade a little bit easier. :)

I just upgraded and my problem was solved. But I should not have to pay even I dollar for it. The fact that you as a company decided to take advantage of something that Dropbox did is unecepatble. You should have taken the information that Dropbox changed the API , adapted a version for your customers to keep them happy and then created a version for upgrade if the customer desires (like any other company. If the customer desires). You can do like Microsoft does with older versions. Stop supporting it. But I can't recall a single version of windows that stopped working and forced people to upgrade.
Clearly you decided to go the easy way. See I have Dropbox and nothing happened with the program itself. It continue functioning. Not so with your program and you blamed Dropbox for it. The fact is that you made a conscience decission to use the opportunity and charge your customers. Not to keep them happy. And I now upgraded to solve my problem but I will look to find an alternative to password protecting and saving from a company that does not do what you guys did. What you guys offered as a solution is an offense to a paying customer that has been purshasing your product since it came out.
Thanks for the information anyway.0 -
I'm so glad to hear that upgrading got things syncing for you! I do apologize that the upgrade was frustrating for you. We would really hate to lose you as a customer. Your feedback here is very much appreciated. If there's anything further that we can do, please let us know!

Yes you could revise your decision to charge people for something you should have provided as any other software company for free. I just want you and your company to understand that it was not frustrating because the software was frustrating. Was frustrating because you charge for something that you should have provided for free. I hope I'm not alone in this and I will check if there is other people frustrated as me. Maybe if we all voice our concern your company might listen and maybe does not repeat this decision in the future. We all have to learn from our mistakes but it seams that you do not even aknowledge that there was a mistake made. Interesting.
Thanks.0 -
@eduardohers by your logic, I should be pissed of if I have bought Windows XP, and now Microsoft wouldn't upgrade me to Windows 8 for free. Software development has it's costs. So does maintaining it, and supporting. Apple itself doesn't provide a way to offer upgrade pricing in the app store, so I'm not sure why are you blaming Agilebits? for providing you free upgrade from 1Password 2 to 3? How long do you think they should provide you with upgrades?

You guys have done it again , you deserve the title of best Password program and the worse , I mean the worse ever , ever company to do business with.
I really think you should be proud of the application and ashamed of the way you do business , and worse you try to blame it on the fact no one was thinking about it?????That Apple is to blame? That the mistake was to include in version 5 and then remove it?
I have now 5.02 in my Yosemite running mac and I realize that you removed the possibility of me syncing with the iCloud when and where I have my iPhone that I purchased the app to sync with it.
I have to change the iPhone and the Mac to sync with iCloud , or buy again ( Again) the application from the Apple store so I can do this?
Do you think there is no limit to the mistakes you can do? Do you really believe that the fact that the application is good you will be able to do this???
Not to offer the customer the choice of using the Web store or the Mac store is a big mistake you make again. People can decide where they want to sync the data they have.
I will see the response you have for this post if you ever respond and will buy any other application that will allow me to use iCloud for syncing and forget this ever happened.
Please understand that you can't do this , offer the choice that your customer has to buy again the application ( Money will come to you anyway) After I already had to purchased 2 times.
Last time the offer was that since the application was on sale it was not that expensive ( Really)
Sorry guys this time is one time too many.
Anyway maybe you have already a good solution for this and I will be the first to write that you guys realize the big mistake you did and you found a reasonable solution. But if the solution is to buy the app again to have it sync with iCloud then I will understand that I can't do business with your company.0 -
And a reply to spitf1r3:
You compare a operation system to a really small application is incorrect and you missed the point.
I understand that there is cost involved to development and I understand that in major upgrades you charge the customer.
We are talking here about me buying windows 8 and receiving 8.1 as a free upgrade not buying to operational systems with 7 years of use and expecting to get it for free. This was not the case here. Also You still can do with windows 8 what you did with XP and with Agilibits you can't.
ˇhey removed first the Dropbox api and blamed Dropbox then removed the Apple iCloud and blamed on Apple. Creating 2 versions , the one you buy at Apple and the one you buy from them. And if you purchased the version in your computer from them and the one in your iPad or iPhone from the Apple store then you are out of luck , you can't sync the Mac with the iPhone with iCloud . Only if you purchased the application at Apple store for all your devices you can do that.
If you call this acceptable and that my expectations with the company to provide compatibility and function is too much , then we completely disagree.0 -
As expected I did not received an answer , so I guess it is just a bad business practice that you hope it will just pass and that will be forgotten. Maybe it will I will move to another application.
