Licensing questions

Deepest apologies as I know this has been answered already. I did a several google and forum searches and couldn't find anything.

The way I understand it, 1Password for Windows/OSX does not have lifetime licenses. In other words, for every major version, you must purchase a new license with discount pricing (50% off?). Is there a grace period of some type? I thought I read 1 1/2 years somewhere, but now I can't find it.

Now, with 1Password for iOS, my understanding is that once it is purchased and a new version comes out, it must be repurchased again at full pricing? Is that correct? Is there a grace period for the iOS app? How would this work? It is also my understanding that once a new version comes out, you MUST repurchase the app unless you made a backup on iTunes.

My final question is how often does this happen? Privacy is important but things can be mighty expensive upgrading to every new version.

Thanks as always

    Hi @mia,

Thanks so much for taking the time to write in. I know that licensing issues are a bit tricky, and it's not always easy to find the answers that you're looking for in the forums. I'd be happy to answer your questions here.

The way I understand it, 1Password for Windows/OSX does not have lifetime licenses. In other words, for every major version, you must purchase a new license with discount pricing (50% off?).

When you purchase a version of 1Password, say 1Password 4 for Mac or 1Password 4 for Windows, you have a lifetime license for that version. You can continue to use it as long as you want. All updates for that version will be free.

We do our best to keep paid upgrades few and far between. When 1Password 3 for Mac was released back in November 2009, it was the first paid upgrade in the history of AgileBits. Since then, 66 free upgrades to 1Password 3 for Mac have been released. These 66 free updates included 738 changes and are detailed in the release notes. 1Password 4 was released as a paid upgrade in 2012. For that release, we offered a 9 month upgrade window: anyone who purchased 1Password 3 in 2012 before the release got 1Password 4 for free. I can't say much about our future plans, but as you've noted, we do our best to ensure that our loyal customers don't have to pay full price for upgrades, if they pay at all. :)

Now, with 1Password for iOS, my understanding is that once it is purchased and a new version comes out, it must be repurchased again at full pricing? Is that correct? Is there a grace period for the iOS app?

Unfortunately, the App Store doesn't really provide us with a way to discount the iOS app for users who have purchased a previous version, so new versions of the iOS app will be the same price for new users as for existing users. As far as a grace period goes, we do have a 30 day guarantee, so if you were to purchase a previous version 30 days before the new one was introduced, we'd be sure to take care of you. :)

It is also my understanding that once a new version comes out, you MUST repurchase the app unless you made a backup on iTunes.

1Password 3 for iOS was removed from the App Store when we introduced 1Password 4 for iOS, but it did not disappear from the devices of users who already owned it. You can continue to use a previous version, and reinstall it as necessary as long as you need. All of your past purchases are available in the App Store, under Updates > Purchases. (Just be sure that you are using the same AppleID to reinstall that you used to make the original purchase.)

My final question is how often does this happen? Privacy is important but things can be mighty expensive upgrading to every new version.

I hope that my previous statements have helped to show that we do keep paid upgrades as few and far between as possible. In addition, we do not stop supporting previous versions when a new version is released - you're not required to update the software for each version, we'll be happy to help you if things get tangled up, no matter which version you're using.

In case you're considering purchasing 1Password right now, but are wary because of the new updates to iOS and OS X coming soon, we have recently announced that the iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 Yosemite updates to 1Password will be free for 1Password 4 users. :)

I think I've answered all your questions here, but if you'd like any further clarification, we're here to help!
