Should the master password for Password 5/yosemite synch to other macs and iOS devices?
I just installed 1Password 5 on my Macbook with Yosemite and then installed it on my iMac and my iphone 6 using the Apple App Store. I changed the master password on the Macbook, but it hasn't synched to my iPhone or the other Mac, but newly created Login accounts have synched fine. I did a search and this question appears to have been asked by a dozen different people on a dozen different occasions but I can't find that it's ever been answered.
Do I have to change it everywhere manually?

@kingtaco28 I don't have a great answer for you I'm afraid. Probably the easiest workaround is to simply change it manually on each device to the new master password. What would also work is if you were to reset each device with the issue on the assumption that your Dropbox is up to date and nothing would be lost. Your master password change is being pushed to Dropbox but there's an ongoing bug where it isn't being picked up by other devices. It's all to do with the fact that your master password actually only encrypts the key that unlocks your actual vault and how that relates to strong security. If I can find it I'll link you to a post by jpgoldberg who explains how and why. Suffice to say there's a very good reason why your master password doesn't unlock your actual vault.

Hi @kingtaco28,
Just to add a couple things to @littlebobbytables's advice: If other changes to your 1Password data are syncing between your Macs and iPhone, then it sounds like the sync itself is fine and the issue is specific to the master password. The main thing to keep in mind is that 1Password doesn't sync until it is unlocked, so after changing the master password on one Mac, you'll still need to sign in again on the other Mac and iPhone with the old master password before the new one will start working.
If the new master password still won't work to unlock 1Password on your iPhone, please try this:
- Unlock 1Password on your iOS device with the old master password
- Allow it to fully sync
- Once the sync is complete, go to Settings > Security > Lock Now
- Try to unlock 1Password with the new master password
You can try the same thing on your other Mac if necessary. Does this help at all?

I tried @Drew_AG 's steps and it didn't help. My phone is still using the old password.
And I should mention that I'm using iCloud to synch. Would switching to Dropbox help?0 -
@kingtaco28, when you unlocked 1Password on your iPhone with the old master password, did you allow the sync to complete? You can check the sync status under Settings > Sync. You may want to try tapping Sync Now, then wait for it to finish, then go to Settings > Security > Lock Now.
As a quick test, try creating a new item in 1Password on your Mac or iPhone (like a new Secure Note) and verify that it syncs from one to the other.
You mentioned that the old master password still works. After following my steps, did you try entering the new master password? Also, have you tried anything on your other Mac? Is it now working with the new master password?
It shouldn't matter that you're using iCloud sync, but you can certainly try switching to Dropbox sync if you want. If you do, please let us know how it goes.

Hi @Drew_AG, I am having the same issue as @kingtaco28. Also using iCloud Drive to sync.
I made the master password change on my Mac and then it is not syncing to my iPhone and iPad (after unlocking with old password, then syncing, then locking again.)
When I unlocked 1Password on my iPhone/iPad, yes I allowed the sync to complete fully.
As a test I created a secure note in my iPhone, and then checked Mac and iPad.. the note syncs and shows up there.
So this seems to be a bug right?... what else is possible?

Hi @jd007 & @kingtaco28,
The workaround steps that @Drew_AG provided will only work if you're using Dropbox/AgileKeychain sync. iCloud sync in 1Password5 for Mac and iPhone doesn't currently support Master Password syncing until the next release (coming soon) (5.1 for Mac, 5.2 for iOS). At that point you'll want to invoke the Master Password change again on one of the devices, even if you give it the same password. This will push up the change to iCloud for you.
From then on, you should be able to use the new Master Password on any device configured with iCloud Sync. Note that the old password will still work on a device until you use the new password. Once you've used the new password once, the old password will no longer work (technically speaking it's when you use the new password that we validate it and switch your device over to the new password).
Hope this helps.
Rick

Hi guys, OK so I updated to Mac v 5.1, but still not working to sync the password change to my iOS versions.
I did this:
-Unlock 1Password on your iOS device with the old master password
- Allow it to fully sync
- Once the sync is complete, go to Settings > Security > Lock Now
- Try to unlock 1Password with the new master password
... but no, only the old password unlocks iOS versions. What else can I try?

Hi @jd007,
You'll also need to update to 1Password 5.2 on your iOS devices. Once you've installed the 1Password updates on your Mac and iOS devices, you'll need to change the Master Password again (even if you change it to the same one). That should push the change to iCloud, so you'll be able to use the new master password on the other devices as well.
Keep in mind that the old master password will still work on a device until you use the new master password. Once you've used the new master password once, the old one will no longer work.
Does that help? Let us know how it goes.
