1Password 5, update 5.0.2 continually times out
I recently upgraded to 1 Password 5, having upgraded my iMAC to Yosemite. From v 5.0.1 I am now being offered update to 5.0.2 (build #502007), but the download continually fails, giving the 'request timed out' message. I've probably tried 10 times over the last 5 days with the same result. All my other internet services are working fine. Is there a problem with this upgrade or Agile servers or is there any other advice anyone can offer?

I did have the same message once this morning (UK time) when trying to download a beta update so it may be something to do with the AgileBits servers. I simply tried again a few moments later and the download worked. (I appreciate you've been trying for much longer but thought it worth mentioning my experience.)
I'm assuming from what you say that you bought your version of 1P5 direct from AgileBits rather than from the Mac App Store.

Thanks for your very quick reply Stephen. Yes, I bought directly from Agile - starting back with 1P3. I've cleared caches and tried downloading again with the same result 'download failed. Request timed out'. I raised a ticket with Agile 4 days ago, but no reply so far. Any other ideas ?

I'm stumped...but the workaround would be to download direct from here. Once you've done that and installed check 1P5 > Check for Updates... and see if that actually works, or whether it still times out.

Thank you Stephen, your workaround certainly worked just fine - many thanks. I wonder what will happen when 5.0.x comes out:-)

Same here. Download failed: The request timed out. I'm going from 4.4.3 to 5.0.2

Hi @JoshHeald,
Could you try downloading straight from this link in Safari? This is the exact link that the updater should be fetching from at the moment. I'm curious to see what you get. What part of the world are you from? Since this is served from a CDN different people end up reaching different servers. It's possible, if not likely, that those of you that are having issues are from the same area and are hitting the same server which is misbehaving.
Thanks.

Hi @rickfillion - I'm in the UK, and downloading from that link did work fine. However, before I installed it I went back to the app and tried the update again, and that also worked this time. Prior to my earlier post I'd tried over several days, always getting the problem, so I don't know what's different this evening, but at least it's working now!

Hi @JoshHeald Glad to hear it finally started working though the workaround of downloading a fresh copy will always be a trick worth trying should it ever happen again for any reason.

Mine has been like this for several updates now. The solution is to cancel the first try immediately, and then try again....works straightaway everytime.

Interesting. Thanks for letting us know!

Well here we are again - I have the same problem with upgrading to 5.1 as I had with 5.0.2 - see my posting of 8 Nov 2014 above. I followed Stephen's link to install a new version from the website and so have my update. However, there is something that needs fixing Agile!

There is a more active thread on the same subject in the beta section:
https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/comment/178510#Comment_178510
I can tell within two seconds if it going to hang, it takes another second to cancel and restart, which always works....much quicker than downloading separately. See post #12 above.

Hi guys,
Can you tell us if you live in UK? As mikebore correctly point out in the beta thread above, we're narrowing this down to a Yosemite DNS bug specific to UK CDN servers. We haven't been able to find a workaround but we can confirm it is not 1Password issue because the same thing happens if you visit our site in the browser, it would hang and requires a refresh to fix it.

Same problem here - I have been trying for days to download the update but the 'cancel then immediately re-try' trick worked for me first time. I am in UK.

Yes I am in the UK. However, I am a little confused: if this is a Yosemite issue, why do I only experience it when trying to update 1P5?

As MikeT said:

Maybe you access those servers only when updating 1P5.

@apbristow and @Phil47, thank you for confirming you're in the UK! That certainly sounds like it's part of the Yosemite DNS bug mentioned by MikeT. If you're curious, there is a bit more information about it in this thread.

Sorry - but I'm not familiar with your nomenclature - what and where are the 'UK CDN' servers?

Hi @Phil47
CDN stands for Content Delivery Network. Essentially it's a way of distributing files so that a single server isn't being hammered by the entire world. The CDN takes care of returning the best server for a specific user based on their geographical location hence the reference to the UK. There are many different suppliers of such networks and many sites you probably use make use of them without you being aware. Initial diagnosing suggests the issue is with our CDN and specifically with the UK but we still need to investigate further to pin down what is happening.

Many thanks for the lucid explanation. I would be very happy to help provide any information from the UK to aid diagnosis.

Hi guys,
Anybody here uses DNSCrypt?

I am receiving the same problem for the upgrade from 5.02 to 5.1 - I live in the UK too. I have taken the workaround suggested to download the full product again from here https://agilebits.com/downloads

I'm glad to hear the workaround at least allows you to get up and running again @j40
