Due to the update I started noticing that my iPhone and iPad (both on iOS8.1) hadn't synced with Dropbox for weeks. I updated and still couldn't sync. Disabled sync and tried to reenable but I got an error after receiving a pop up with "getting encryption keys". I tried to delete the app and reinstall it but now all I get when trying to connect to the Dropbox vault is a "Dropbox.com 404 error".

I was just about to write that sync works fine on my Mac but I just opened the app and got a notification about sync problems.

    Hi @Jonas Ahmt,

I moved your message to this new thread as it seems to be a different issue now. To make sure I understand, is the 404 error happening after installing the 5.1.2 update on your iOS devices?

The 404 error from Dropbox indicates a problem communicating with their servers. In most cases, it is temporary and should start working again soon. If not, can you please check the Dropbox app on your iPhone and iPad to see if has any trouble? And does the Dropbox.com website work in Safari on the devices?

As for the problem on your Mac, what exactly did the notification say? Is Dropbox sync still set up in the 1Password sync settings?

The 404 error started appearing after reinstalling the 1Password app - so yes, it is after the 5.1.2 update. Before I did the reinstall (but after the update) I got another kind of error which appeared after a bit of "downloading encryption keys". It was not a 404 error but unfortunately I can't remember the exact wording.

The Dropbox app seems to work fine. I have tried disabling the passcode lock in Dropbox since I fairly recently enabled that and I figured that might have caused the problem - that didn't make any difference, though. My Dropbox account seems to work fine, both through Safari and via the app.

As for the Mac problem the notification said "1Password Sync - Problem detected - Update preferences". When I opened the preferences in 1Password it still says "Syncing with Dropbox" and the path points to the 1Password keychain in Dropbox. However, when I clicked the "Fix" button in the notification I was sent to the same preference pane but with a requirement to choose sync option. I chose the 1Password keychain and was told a merge was required. I accepted. Now the status says "Never synced." and I don't know how to try to force it to sync.

Hold your horses! I might have been too quick to report problems. At least it seems like both my iPhone and iPad have started syncing now after yet another attempt to sync with Dropbox. It just so happened to coinside with the update that I figured there might have been a more general problem than just a short "outage". Sorry about that.

My Mac still says "Never synced." though...

    Hi @Jonas Ahmt,

I'm happy to hear it's working now on your iPhone and iPad!

On your Mac, the "Never synced" message is normal to see when you first re-enable Dropbox sync, although I've noticed it seems to appear for longer than expected. Please quit the 1Password app on your Mac, then reopen it and go back to the sync settings. Does it still show "Never synced"?

Unfortunately the issue still persists on my Mac. I have tried on the other Mac in the household and encountered the same issue: I.e. I received the notification about sync problems, clicked "Fix" and was told to select a syncing method. After selecting Dropbox and saying "Syncing" for a bit it just says "Never synced" but continues to be pointed to the keychain in Dropbox.

What is even worse, though, is that I today also experienced problems at my job where I'm forced to use a Windows machine. This is the reason I'm using Dropbox to sync instead of iCloud. All the logins etc. appears in the 1Password app, however, none of them contains any data: No usernames, no passwords - nothing. This is of course quite critical as I can't really access any of my accounts from my work machine anymore. Luckily the passwords, usernames etc. still exist on my iOS devices and on my Macs.

    Hi @Jonas Ahmt,

The problem you described on Windows sounds familiar, and if I remember correctly, I think I've seen that happen if the 1Password keychain file was still in the middle of syncing from a Mac to Dropbox. I'd be a little surprised if that's the case here, but it's worth checking. On your Mac, open your Dropbox folder and find your 1Password.agilekeychain file. Does it have a green circle with a check, or a blue circle with a sync symbol? If it has a sync symbol, then Dropbox is still in the middle of copying it to/from the Dropbox servers.

On the other hand, if it has a green circle with a check, it should be fully synced with your Dropbox account. In that case, please try these steps to reset Dropbox sync:

    • On your Windows PC, close 1Password.
    • On your iPhone & iPad, open 1Password and go to Settings > Sync > Sync Service. Tap Disable Sync and confirm you want to disable it.
    • On one Mac, go to the Sync settings in 1Password, then click Change Syncing. Confirm you want to Disable Sync.
    • On your other Mac, go to the Sync settings in 1Password, then click Change Syncing and check the box to Delete data from Dropbox. Confirm that you want to Disable Sync.
    • Reboot both Macs and iOS devices.
    • On one Mac, re-enable Dropbox sync in 1Password (this should create a new keychain file in Dropbox). Allow Dropbox to fully sync.
    • On your other Mac, iPhone and iPad, re-enable Dropbox sync again, choosing the new keychain file you just created.
    • On your Windows PC, open 1Password.

Let me know how it all goes, and if you have any questions. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions, however there have been progress without me doing anything. As it was the case with the iOS applications which started to sync automatically again, I have experienced the same with the Macs. However, the problem still remains on the Windows PC. Do you still suggest to attempt the steps above?

  • Good morning Jonas. I'm glad to hear that 1Password is syncing properly between your Mac and iOS devices. Because of that let's not disable syncing there for now and see what we can do to get your Windows PC up to date.

Let's start by making sure that your Dropbox account on your Windows PC is working properly. Can you add a simple text file or picture to your Dropbox folder and make sure it shows up on your Windows machine's Dropbox folder?

If so, open 1Password and choose File > Open 1Password Vault and then navigate to your Dropbox folder and choose your 1Password keychain file there.

Try that and see let us know how that works out for you.

My Dropbox seems to be working fine on the Windows machine. 1Password has also been working fine with Dropbox previously. I don't know if some update has broken it - possibly because I have updated without rebooting the computer? Why is this even a requirement? It seems extremely old fashioned and it doesn't really fit into my work schedule to have to reboot a computer with tons of open windows just to do a simple update of an application.

I have tried to uinstall 1Password (followed by the required reboot) and install it again but it seemed to remember all settings so it was already connected to the keychain in Dropbox and the usernames and passwords remains empty.

  • Good morning Jonas, thanks for writing back. What happens if you try to tell 1Password to open your vault on Dropbox using File > Open 1Password Vault?

It just shows the 1Password keychain in Dropbox already being selected. When I click OK again (after making sure that it is still selected) nothing new really happens. The usernames and passwords are still blank.

  • Good morning, Jonas. I'd like to recommend that we do a complete reset of the sync setup. Starting with 1Password on both your iOS devices:

    1. Tap on Settings > Sync > Sync Service > Disable Sync
    2. On your Mac, open 1Password for Mac, and click the 1Password menu, then Preferences. Click Sync, and click Change syncing.
    3. Check the box to remove the data from Dropbox and confirm that you want to disable sync.
    4. Restart your Mac and iOS devices.
    5. Check your Dropbox folder and delete any other 1Password folders or files you find there.
    6. Check your Dropbox folder on your Windows machine to ensure that your 1Password files are gone from there as well.
    7. Set up syncing on your Mac again using the instructions here: Sync with Dropbox on Mac
    8. Once the Dropbox activity indicator in the menu bar has stopped spinning set up syncing on your iOS devices using the instructions here: Sync with Dropbox on iOS
    9. Lastly, set up syncing on your Windows machine using this instructions: Sync with Dropbox on Windows

Let me know how this works for you. If you run into any trouble just let me know.

    Hi again

I finally got around to try this and it worked perfectly. Thank you very much for your help. Being without 1Password for a bit makes you realize how important the tool actually is for your daily workflow.

  • Thanks for the update and feedback!
