Why can secondary vaults not sync via Dropbox?

I've got two 1Password vaults (one for myself and one for my wife). I have a Windows computer where I manage both of these vaults. I have tested both wifi sync and Dropbox sync and the Dropbox sync is more convenient. However, we have three iOS devices (iPad 2 - shared, iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S). I'd like to sync all the vaults via Dropbox, but I can only sync the Primary vault on each device via Dropbox. This has lead to this difficult to manage situation where I sync her accounts via Dropbox as the Primary vault on two iOS devices but I have to sync my iOS device via wifi. I CANNOT sync my vault on the iPad because secondary vaults cannot use wifi sync.

Will there be an update where you can sync multiple vaults/devices via Dropbox? This is a pretty annoying limitation of this product, which I otherwise have found very helpful. It would be SO much easier to use if the Dropbox sync were able to handle multiple vaults on each device.

    Hi @jblo999‌

I sincerely apologize for the confusion here. In fact, all your vaults can sync via Dropbox. It's our most flexible sync option available right now.

The trick is that each vault on your Mac has individual sync settings, so you will need to go into Preferences > Sync while viewing each secondary vault and set up syncing to Dropbox. This will generate a 'vault name'.agilekeychain in the Dropbox location that you specify. These will be available when you open up 1Password's sync preferences on iOS and select 'Add vault'.

For more details about sharing a vault between multiple Dropbox accounts, please see our support article: share a non-primary vault.

I hope this answers all your questions, but if we can be of any further assistance, we're here to help!

Note that there was a limitation in an earlier iOS version that I don't know has been fixed. The limitation is that the 1pw iOS version cannot since with two "primary" vaults if those vaults are in the .opvault format. Rob and I spent quite some time sorting this out and he finally logged it a bug in the iOS version. In my case, my wife and I both had "primary" vaults in our respective Dropbox accounts. She shared her Dropbox folder with me and I synced her vault as a secondary vault in my version of 1PW for the Mac with no problem. We did this so I could manage our shared items. However, when I tried to sync her vault to my iPad after syncing my vault first, 1PW iOS recognized her "primary" vault but refused to sync it. If the vaults were in .agilekeychain format, no problem. If they were in .opvault format, no go...

  • Thanks for writing in @oshloel‌, that limitation has been fixed and primary vaults can be added as secondary vaults in 1Password for iOS now.

Yes, after some more tinkering, this starting working again. I had to backup all my vaults, remove all the vaults from all my devices and then just start over. (The odd thing is that Dropbox syncing had been working for all vaults on all devices previously and then things stopped working on just one device. I should have know to start from scratch but I was not previously comfortable enough to know I would not lose all my data.) I'm hoping I've resolved all my syncing problems now. Thanks for the help.
