Local WiFi sync & subnets

Hi there!

My Mac and iOS devices are in different subnets. The Mac is connected by cable (10.10.10.24/24), the iOS devices by WiFi (10.10.20.56/24).

As I tested, the WiFi sync does only work, if all devices are in the same subnet. Is there a way to sync them over NAT in different subnets?

Sincerely

  • Hi @balvenie,

Unfortunately, there isn't an easy way to do this because Bonjour is advertising in the local subnet only, it doesn't leave the subnet you're in.

The one way is to bypass bonjour and enter the IP address manually, which we don't support at the moment.

Would this work for you if we decide to add support to locally enter your Mac's IP address in the iOS app?

    Thanks Mike for your feedback.

Since the IP addresses are handled by DHCP, entering IP address would result into another limitation.

A more straight forward solution would be, if every iOS device can sync on the same sync copy of the database on NAS as the Macs do. What about to add the possibility to sync iOS devices the same way as the Macs do, direct to the same copy of database on NAS?

    Hi @balvenie‌

With Folder Sync the OS does the work for us in terms of presenting the File System. It's usually labelled as for advance use as keeping the keychain available and in sync is on the user. As you know iOS devices are a lot more restricted so I'm not sure how feasible it would be. I know in the past we explored WebDAV but ran into performance issues that 'nixed the attempt.

This isn't to say we aren't always looking at offering alternatives, it's just a tricky one when it comes to iOS devices.

    --Edit--

There seems to be something brand new in iOS called storage providers. Maybe not short-term but depending on how it pans out it may allow some alternatives.
