Trouble finding my license

My understanding of 1Password is the license is lifetime and can be installed on any number of machines. Is that true?

Major updates sometimes require payment to use, but so long as you are on a version that your license applies to, you have a lifetime license. And the license terms are that you are free to install the software on as many machines of the same platform as you wish, as long as you own and use them yourself.

There is another little nuance, though. As of the release of version 5 for Mac, you can also use your own single user license on the machines of as many as six family members. If you buy from the Mac App Store, that allows for Family sharing, with the same terms with respect to multiple users in the same family.

Now, your subject line says you are having trouble finding your license. Nothing I've said applies to a search for your license, so if I haven't answered your underlying question, post back.

Hi Hawmoth, thanks for the reply! It's super helpful. How can I find my license key? My understand is that it would be a series of numbers and letters..? I requested that my license be emailed to me, but the email implied that I needed to download stuff again.

What version of 1Password are you using? Before version 4, there was a license key that was alphanumeric. You would enter the characters in the license screen to register your copy. When version 4 came out, AgileBits switched from a key to a license file, which you add to the license screen in one of several ways. As I said, that file works for both versions 4 and 5, since the upgrade to version 5 is free to registered users of version 4.

If you have not paid to upgrade from version 3 (or earlier) to version 4 or 5, you will need to do that if you want to use the updates. If you have paid for that upgrade, you received an email message with a link to the license file. If you can't find that email, you can request that AgileBits resend it by going to this link and filling in the email you used for your original purchase.

If you are still having troubles, you can email to support+licenses@ agile bits. com with as much information about your purchase as you can provide.

Everything I've said assumes that we are talking about an original purchase from the AgileBits web store. If you originally purchased your copy from the Mac App Store, there is no license key or file. Apple keeps track of licensing for those purchases. And you can use the software on any Mac, as long as all of them use the same Apple ID for purchases. But there is still an upgrade fee to move from version 3 to newer ones. (Version 5 requires OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).

    Hi @katebakes,

Sorry for any confusion! I was able to find a license associated with the email address for your forum account. You originally bought a license for 1Password 4 for Mac, which is now also a license for 1Password 5 for Mac (it was a free upgrade). Instead of a license code, versions 4 and 5 for Mac use a license file. If you haven't already done so, you can download that file and add it to the 1Password app.

The license email should have a link to a page where you can download your license file. Steps to add that file are on the same page (in most cases, you can simply double-click the license file, and it will add itself to 1Password).

If you need more help to do that, please let us know. :)

@Drew_AG‌ thanks for the help! I downloaded the link from the email but when logged into 1password, the trial expired box is still there. Does this mean I need to pay for the new version? I'm confused. If I needed to pay for the new version, I would think the button would say something else..?

This is the email I got, did I download the correct thing? Sorry for the multitude of questions.

    @katebakes‌

Thats the correct license. Click the link to automatically add your license.

Might you be seeing a known bug in the license window. Its a buy / upgrade button shown after you view the license window.

To fix the trial expired all you would need to do is reapply your license. This topic may help you. Trial expired bug notice.

    Hi @katebakes,

Did @thightower's suggestion help? To answer your other question, you do not need to purchase the new version, you already have a license for it. You just need to add your license file to the 1Password app. If the steps from the linked topic above don't help, please let us know. Thanks!
