Firefox ext disappeared - unable to reinstall!
Firefox ext has disappeared and I have tried several times to reinstall it but even if everything works fine, the 'actual' ext never appears in the right top corner where used to be...
Running paid version of 1Password 5.02 and Firefox version 34.0; system OS 10.10.1 Yosemite on a MacBook Pro
Thank you!

Is it merely the 1P FF icon that you don't see? If you go to FF > Tools > Add-ons does it show the 1P extension is in fact installed?
If the extension is installed you should be able to click the three line "hamburger" at the right end of the FF toolbar, click Customise at the bottom left of the window that opens and drag the 1P icon to the FF toolbar.

Got a similar problem. Extension shows fine in FF>Tools>Add-ons but doesn't appear in the Customize panel. MacMini, 10.6.8. FF 35.

You appear to be using a beta version of Firefox on OS X Snow Leopard. What version of 1P are you using?

Hi @alexliz
Have you tried uninstalling any copies of our extension, closing the browser and then downloading a fresh copy. Does that make any difference?

Hi @Stephen_C and @littlebobbytables, thanks!
My Firefox version is 35.0.1, no 'beta' showing anywhere.
My 1P is a bit of a weird story. I seem to have 4 invoices. 3 of them for version 2, and 1 more for v. 3. I have no idea how I ended up with 4 purchases. I'm currently using 1P v3.8.22 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. On my MacBook Pro it's fine. It used to be fine on my 2008 MacMini, until a few months ago, something happened for no apparent reason and my FF addon stopped updating through my Dropbox connection.
After many attempts to 'fix' it, I decided to re-install the 1P addon on the MacMini's Firefox. But every time I launched 1Password app, then went to File>Preferences>Browsers and hit the "Install Extensions" button at bottom right, Firefox launched and took me to the https://agilebits.com/extensions/mac/index.html page, I clicked on "Firefox 21+", the addon download completed and then I keep seeing the warning: "1Password could not be installed because Firefox cannot modify the needed file."
This happens every time I try.
I've got exactly the same OS and FF on the MacBook Pro.

Hi @alexliz,
Thanks for confirming your version numbers.
Let's try this:
- Open our extension download page in Safari
- Click the Firefox logo and download the Firefox file in Safari
- Open Firefox, go to the Extensions area and drag the XPI file into Firefox from Finder
Does this help?

Hi @alexliz,
Is 1Password the only add-on you can't install? Can you download a different add-on at Firefox's add-on store and see if it works? If you can't install other add-ons, it means your profile is likely in a read-only state, which means Firefox cannot make any changes to the directory.

Hi
Here is one option, How to fix home folder permissions in OS X. This should take care of not just the Firefox issues but also ensure permissions across your entire user account are correct.
If you use FileVault there are an extra couple of steps because the recovery mode won't mount the encrypted drive by default. Before using the Reset Password program you would want to open Utilities > Disk Utility. There will be a disk entry probably titled
Macintosh HD
that is greyed out. Select it and next to the Burn button there should be one titled Unlock. Click on that button and supply your password. You can then follow the rest of the steps above. The result is all of your permissions should be reset.
If you still have issues after that you might be best to export your Firefox bookmarks and then start with a fresh Firefox profile and see if that improves the situation. After exporting your bookmarks you'd want to do the following.
- Quit Firefox if it's running.
- Open a Finder window.
- Use the
⇧⌘G
keyboard shortcut to open the Go to Folder... window and paste in the following location~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
- Move that folder to your Desktop
- Reboot your Mac to avoid any caching issues in Yosemite
- Launch Firefox to create a fresh profile and import your bookmarks
Let us know how you get along.

Hi @littlebobbytables, thanks, that worked!
Only, I've got the 'key' icon showing, but, next to it, also a funny-looking old-styled "1P" icon, with the right half of the letter "P" missing. Is that necessary, or can I remove one of the two and have a proper-looking icon? Preferably get rid of the 1P and keep the key?EDIT: I just dragged the broken "1P" out of the toolbar. It transformed into a jig-saw puzzle piece thingy in the Customize dialog, which I don't quite understand.
On the flip side, I now have a nice looking key icon on my toolbar! Weird!

Hi @alexliz,
Unfortunately, that extra '1P' icon is a known issue with the 1Password 3 extension. You may need to periodically get it out of the way, but the key icon extension should behave properly for you - please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns!

Since upgrading to Firefox 35.0.1 I can't get the extension installed either. I just keep getting the "1password could not be installed because firefox cannot modify the needed file" message too. I'v e disabled file vault and gone through the whole permissions thing to no avail, and tried redownloading Firefox also. Short of completely wiping Firefox and starting with a brand new install, which I am not inclined to do considering I'll have to go get all my other extensions all over again. What's causing this?

Hi @Jeff_T,
Are you able to install any other extensions or is it just 1Password?
You could try creating a separate profile and see if the extension can be installed in there. If yes, you can try to export your data from the current profile and import it in the new profile before trashing the old profile. Here's how to start with creating a separate profile: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

Hmmm....tested it by trying to install "HTML5 Video Everywhere!" and got the same error. Apparently the Firefox "upgrade" broke itself. Of all the stuff I tried to get this figured out, I forgot to try this simple test. Thanks for the help. Looks like it'll be a fresh start.

Did a "refresh firefox" and was able to install the extension. Of course, I get to re-install all my old add-ons too now....

Hi @Jeff_T,
Yea, the Refresh Firefox feature does remove add-ons (which is why I suggested a separate profile instead) among a few things as they mentioned here:
These items and settings will be removed:
Extensions and themes, website permissions, modified preferences, added search engines, download history, DOM storage, security settings, download actions, plugin settings, toolbar customizations, user styles and social features will be removed.
Note: Your old Firefox profile will be placed on your desktop in a folder named "Old Firefox Data." If the reset didn't fix your problem you can restore some of the information not saved by copying files to the new profile that was created. If you don't need this folder any longer, you should delete it as it contains sensitive information.
You might be able to put the extension files back from the old profile into the new one but I'd suggest doing clean installs instead. Don't forget to remove the folder on desktop if you're all set with Firefox.
