Won't Lock Automatically

I am currently using 1Password 4.4.3 on a Mac Pro running OSX 10.9.5. I have noticed for some time that 1Password will not lock automatically even though I have preferences set to lock after 5 minutes. It will lock by clicking the lock icon or using the keyboard shortcut. Just today it dawned on me that this may be a problem with my Mac because for about a year it won't sleep on schedule but will sleep by using the menu or power button. I think there is something preventing scheduled items to execute. I tried disconnecting USB devices and turning off Bluetooth but couldn't get it to behave properly. Since I just realized that the two things may be due to the same underlying issue, I thought I would ask here for any ideas.

You may be right that something is just preventing any schedules from working.

On the other hand, there are plenty things that can prevent sleep. Disconnecting peripherals, which you have tired, is a good way to start. Next step, if it is only a problem with sleep, is to go into Terminal and type

    pmset -g assertions.

That will give a fairly easily readable report of things preventing sleep.

Well interesting...I actually went through this command several months ago trying to figure out the sleep thing and got nowhere. I tried it this time and got this output:
    Assertion status system-wide:
    BackgroundTask 1
    PreventDiskIdle 0
    ApplePushServiceTask 0
    UserIsActive 0
    PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep 0
    InteractivePushServiceTask 0
    PreventSystemSleep 0
    ExternalMedia 0
    PreventUserIdleSystemSleep 0
    NetworkClientActive 0

I tried turning off Bluetooth and 1Password locked! But the machine didn't go into sleep. Unfortunately my magic mouse is Bluetooth and I don't want to give that up. I'll try disconnecting all the USB devices again but it didn't work last time.

Oh, THAT background task. There is something there that prevents sleep. I've never got to the bottom of it despite a lot of internet searching about sleep problems. Rebooting sometimes helps.

I'm quite happy to say I've never suffered anything like that so you have my sympathies. If you have a spare external drive you can muck about with it might be worth seeing if the error persists from a fresh instance of Mavericks.

    Just a thought.

I've remembered a bit more. The process is something to do with Spotlight, and the issue for me was an interaction between Spotlight and Crashplan backup. Something like this.

    1. Crashplan takes some action and notes the action in its log.

    2. Spotlight sees the Crashplan log has changed, and indexes the change.

    3. Crashplan notices the Spotlight index has changed and acts (so we're back in 1 with an infinite loop).

If that's anything like your situation I can say more.
