Using 1password on computers without 1password

Hi there,

Just one simple question. I am planning on installing 1password on my home computer and using some of the complex generated codes for my various important services – email, bank, social media etc.

My question is this. What happens if I go to another computer, for example my work computer or a friends computer and I want to log into one of these accounts that I now have a really complex password for. How can i get access to it?

Yes, this is always an interesting question. :) There are really two current solutions that I can think of:

    1. If you use Dropbox you can use 1PasswordAnywhere which will give you read-only web access to your passwords. Note that it currently works only with Dropbox.
    2. You can sync your 1P data to a phone or tablet (which is what I do) and carry it around with you. Admittedly that then involves some careful reading and typing but it's better than nothing! (In fact, I'd normally use the phone or tablet to access what I want so that I don't have to type passwords manually.)

Hi @stephen_C, as I sometimes travel to China where Dropbox is not available, I wonder how I can use 1PAnywhere? Correct me if I was wrong, I presume that simply moving the entire 1P dropbox data to other available cloud storage or even a flash drive wouldn't work, would it?

  • Hi @d2hghvD4ybAaMQ‌

Unfortunately probably not. In order to work properly with modern web browsers it is necessary to run 1PasswordAnywhere through a web server (such that the page is loaded through an HTTP or preferably an HTTPS link). The only cloud storage provider that I am personally aware of that can do this is Dropbox, and a flash drive almost definitely can't do it for you, unless you do something like this:

    (not supported by AgileBits)

The only officially supported solution for 1PasswordAnywhere at this point is Dropbox.

    Hi!

I'm using 1Password 4 for Mac (version 4.4.3). I'm finding that my 1PasswordAnywhere (the 1Password.html file on dropbox) is not in sync with the most recent data in my app. In fact, it's got a modification date from 10/06/14.

Is there any way to give this a kick in the pants?

I tried deactivating the sync to dropbox, then "hiding" the original 1Password folder in an untitled folder on dropbox and re-establishing a new sync relationship on dropbox. After waiting for it to upload, it's still showing as being modified on the same date.

I saw a suggestion in another post about choosing "File > Repair 1Password Data..." but that seems like maybe it's a Windows only solution. Any comparable Mac tricks?

    Thanks!

  • Hi @jaybee‌

    I've replied to you here:

For the future to avoid a duplication of efforts please try to avoid posting the same issue in multiple threads. Thanks!

    Thanks!

Once I'd posted, I wondered if I'd made a mistake by piggybacking my issue onto someone else's existing issue. They're related, but not exactly the same. I guess I assumed you folks weren't going to be so responsive. Believe me, other vendors support forums are so bad that it's likely this message would have languished in obscurity forever.

    Thanks again!

Sometimes a thread can slip by but it's certainly not what we aim for. We're also still recovering from the massive surge in support requests following iOS 8 and Yosemite but I think we're slowing regaining a semblance of control. I think from the other thread it sounds like you've got this all sorted out though so I think everybody is good here?
