a few more bits of info, this appears to happen when in landscape mode, not portrait. If when this is happening, I flip to portrait mode, the keyboard is stuck in the middle of the screen instead of being at the bottom.
If I kill off the app, and re-launch in portrait, it appears to work.

I'm sorry you're having trouble with the keyboard! From your description, this sounds like an issue we're aware of which is actually a bug in iOS 8 (our developers have filed a bug report with Apple about it). We've heard of this happening in a few other apps as well. We're still looking into it in case there's anything we can do on our end, but if it is indeed an iOS bug, it will need to be fixed by Apple.
In the meantime, there are a few things you can try to get the keyboard working again, at least temporarily:
Double-click the Home button and swipe up on 1Password to close it, then reopen it.
If the problem is happening in landscape mode, try reopening the app in portrait mode (or vice versa).
If that doesn't help, restart your iOS device (hold down the power button for a few seconds and "slide to power off", then turn it back on again).
