Lost Notes in Upgrade

It took me a while to realize it, but after the update to 1Password5 I lost all of the Notes in my logins. I kept lots of useful info in the notes - such as answers to security questions, account numbers, etc. Is there a fix for this ?

    Hi @mikepark‌

    I'm sorry to hear of that. Can I ask, what version of 1Password did you update from and when did you perform this update? 1Password automatically creates backups so depending on when this happened and what version we can try and figure out where a good copy of the old vault is.

    Whatever the last prior version was - I keep the app up to date. I looked at my app info, and it also indicates I am on a Trial version. I am not sure how to recover my License #.

    I found my license key, but the App does not allow me to paste it in. It opens a search page but does not let me select anything.

    @mikepark‌

    Sounds like you are using version 3 with a key. In version 4 a key was replaced by a file. The same file is used in version 5.

    You can get the version 4 or version 5 file sent to you from the resend my license page.

    You may wish to save the file in 1Password for later use if needed. May users here have done the same. Myself included.

    Hi @mikepark‌

    So you have two issues there. With the licence issue I can only see a purchase from 2011 which would mean a 1Password 3 licence. To run 1Password 4/5 you would need to purchase a new licence. Now if you purchase that licence direct from us you can use your 1Password 3 licence key to obtain a discounted upgrade price. If iCloud support is important to you though you'd need to purchase 1Password from the Apple Mac App Store where we're unable to offer a discount (there is no such facility offered by Apple).

    Back to your notes issue. I don't know when you first installed 1Password 5 but it was first released on the 16th of October this year. As you say you upgraded from 1Password 4 then a backup from before 16/10/14 may work.

    So launch 1Password and enter its preferences. Switch to the Sync tab and disable syncing with the Change Syncing... button if present.

    Now switch to the Backup tab in the preferences and click on the Backup Now button so you know you have a current snapshot. Scroll through the list and find a backup from before you upgraded to 1Password 5 and click on it. The Restore button will be enabled which you will now click. 1Password will ask for confirmation and then shut down. When you re-open it it will be running the database from that backup. You can check the items and see if your notes are present. If they're not you can try an older backup. Once you find one where your notes are still present make a note of the date of that backup and then restore the most current one.

    You're restoring the most current one because if you simply revert to the old backup then any new items or password changes made between that backup and now will be lost. Use the keyboard shortcut ⌃⌥⌘F to bring up the search function. Click where it says favourite and change the option to Date modified. It should default to is greater than and all you need to do now is enter the date of the backup you intend to revert to. This will now list all the items in your current vault that have been created or altered since then. Depending on how bad this list is you may want to simply make a note of the differences or you can select them all and use File > Export > Select Items... to export them using the .1pif format. It's an unencrypted format so you want to be careful with that file but you can use that to import the entries into the old vault. Be careful of items you've changed recently that should have notes in them.

    If that is all successful and you have a working vault with your notes back then you can re-enable syncing.

    Let us know how you get along. If you have any questions or need more detail please do post here before starting.
