Can't enter license

When I double-click "License" under 1Password Menu, the registration menu opens up. When I double-click the "Add License" button, a new Finder-like window opens up that says "Applications." No place to put license code.

What version of 1Password are you running?

    Hi @LouisPerry‌

Can I ask, are you running 1Password 5 and it is asking you for a licence file but you have a licence key?

Based on the email address you registered with here on the forums I see you've purchased a licence for 1Password 3 in the past. Now 1Password 4 was a paid upgrade from 1Password 3 but 1Password 3 users were eligible for a discounted upgrade price if they purchased direct from us (using the licence file as the proof of purchase). Now you may have purchased 1Password 4/5 from us using another email address or you may have purchased it directly from Apple's Mac App Store.

You may find reading Trial Expired notice in 1Password 5 for Mac? might help a little, even if it's just so you can better explain your situation. Once we have a better idea we can hopefully give you the right advice to proceed.

After downloading 1P4 for Mavericks, I cannot input my license number at the 1P menu bar "License" button. All I get is window showing the contents of my Mac Hard Drive with no place for the license.

Version 4 uses a license file, not a license number. You would have received that file when you paid to upgrade from version 3. That dialog you're seeing is to allow you to navigate to the license file so you can elect it.

Problem is I don't have that file anymore. Can that license file be resent by agile bits? I do have my license key all information relative to my initial purchase of 1P, just not the e-mail.

Go to the AgileBits support page, here, and enter the email address you used to buy your license in the top left panel of the page. That will get your license resent.

Thanks for your help. What I received (and what I already had) is my the key for my 1P 3, which is the same key for my 1P 4, I believe. The upper left menu bar of the 1P4 app offers, at the "License," button a window named "Trial Mode" with includes an "Add license..." button and a "Buy Now" button. When I open the "Add license" button to input my key, all I get is what looks like a window showing the contents of my Mac Hard Drive.

  • Hi @LouisPerry,

I have merged your thread with a previous discussion you created. Please see @littlebobbytables' reply in post #3 above, and let us know if that helps.

Thanks to you who've helped me. I have my original 1P3 receipt (and license key) from 11/9/10. Apparently, I never upgraded to 1P4, but now, since I must stick with my reinstalled Mavericks, I must use 1P4 as 1P5 is only for Yosemite. When I open the "Buy Now" button I am given a page that offers purchase of 1P5. Please advise.

The license file for version 5 is identical to the one for version 4. Makes sense, since the update from 4 to 5 is free. Buy version 5 and apply the license to your installation of version 4.

Hi @LouisPerry, hawkmoth is steering you in the right direction. Our licence file hasn't changed between versions 4 and 5 and is valid on both. It also means that if at any point in the future you upgrade to Yosemite or add a second machine running Yosemite then you're already licensed to run 1Password 5 if you so wish

Let us know if you have any further questions.

I'm having the same problem as others, and my trial period has expired. To enter my license for 1Password5, sent to me as text, the dialog asks me to locate a file. There is no file because I never had versions 3 or 4, I started with 5. I bought this in a bundle with Parallels Desktop 10. I didn't see a link to download an earlier version and register that, so I appear to be stuck. As a small software developer myself, I suggest revising your registration procedure to allow either entering the text OR locate the license file. Or you could attach a new license file to the email you send new users and instruct them where to save that file so 1Password can find it. I'm running Yosemite on a late 2012 iMac. Thanks in advance for any help in entering the license.

    Hi @Rick_J,

When you purchase a licence for 1Password 5 you are eligible to run the older versions as well to cater for older machines stuck on particular versions of OS X. So when you purchase even 1Password 5 we supply a licence key so that if needed you can run 1Password 3 for Mac.

Now we can certainly help you download your licence file but I am surprised you're saying you can't as our records are saying your licence file has been downloaded multiple times. Is it possible you have a file in your Downloads folder that ends in .onepassword-license? If 1Password is unlocked it should have picked up on that file immediately but if not double clicking on the file should be enough.

Now I know being part of the Parallels Desktop bundle is different from our normal registration process but I would have hoped Parallels would have supplied instructions if this were the case. I haven't seen the email that they send out though so I can't comment.

Is it the case that since your first post you've made a breakthrough?

Please do let us know and we'll take it from there.

Thanks, littlebobbytables, a search for the file with the unusual filename extension located the file for me, buried deeply in my Library folder. All is well now. ;-)

I upgraded to 1Password 5 - probably from 3 or 4. I have a key string in my vault but now I am asked for a file. Where do I get the file for the upgrade? [Email deleted]

@facedoc I have deleted your email address. This is a public forum and posting it here is an irresistible temptation to spammers.

The upgrade from 1P3 to 1P4/1P5 was paid, not free. 1P3 used a licence number but 1P4/1P5 use (the same) licence file. Did you ever buy 1P4/1P5?

If not, you can buy 1P for Mac either from the Mac App Store or direct from the AgileBits store. There are two things to bear in mind:

    1. If you ever want to use iCloud to sync 1P data between your Mac and iPhone you must buy 1P from the Mac App Store because the version from the AgileBits store doesn't support iCloud sync (following changes made by Apple on the launch of OS X Yosemite). Both versions support sync of 1P data by either local wifi or Dropbox.
    2. If you have owned an earlier version of 1P for Mac you may be entitled to an upgrade discount if you buy from the AgileBits store. That discount won't be available if you buy from the Mac App Store.

I am asked for a file and all I have is a license key string when I try to go from trial to subscribed version 5

    Hi @facedoc,

I checked our records for the email address you're using here in the forums and I did find a record for 1Password 3 for Mac. Now as Stephen_C has covered, moving from 1Password 3 to either version 4 or 5 is a paid upgrade which you might have done if you used another email address, my cursory checking wouldn't be able to find that.

So if you're really certain you never got round to paying for an upgrade then it would seem you will want to either consider that or we can help you return to 1Password 3. Your licence is indefinite and you can continue using 1Password 3 for as long as you like. Of course if you like all the improvements made in 1Password 4/5 hopefully paying for the upgrade won't seem too bad.

If you believe you have paid for a 1Password 4/5 licence since you purchased 1Password 3 we can work with you to find it and get you sorted out. Please just remember these forums are public but if needed we will take the matter to email if anything remotely sensitive needs to be discussed.

@facedoc you have already posted about the same problem in this thread and there are answers in that thread. Please don't post about the same problem in separate threads as it makes support something of a challenge—and also makes it harder for you to know where to look for answers.

    Hi @facedoc,

I moved your message from another discussion to this one that Stephen linked to in his reply, so we don't duplicate efforts or cause confusion between here and there.

As littlebobbytables mentioned, we're only able to find a license for 1Password 3 for Mac under the email address associated with your forum account. If you purchased an upgrade to 1Password 4 or 5 for Mac from the AgileBits Store using a different email address, you can have that license information resent to you from the "I've lost my license" section of this site.

On the other hand, if you never purchased an upgrade to 1Password 4 or 5, you can visit our Upgrade Store and enter your license code to see your upgrade discount and license options.

If you'd like to move this discussion to email, and if you haven't heard from anyone here yet, please feel free to send us an email here: support+licenses@agilebits.com

Please also include a link to this topic and your forum username so we can "connect the dots". Once you've sent the email, feel free to post a brief comment here to let us know, and we'll be happy to track it down and make sure it gets answered as soon as possible. Thanks!
