The operation couldn't be completed (dropbox.com error 404)
I am unable to sync to any shared vaults on both my iPhone 5 (8.1.2) nor my iPad mini (8.1.2). Every time I try to Sync with Dropbox through either device I get the same "operation couldn't be completed". I am able to browse to the Dropbox folder with no problem through the Dropbox app, so it's not a Dropbox issue. I am also able to add the same shared vault through my Mac, so the issue appears to be isolated in iOS. I also tried deleting the 1Password app and re-installing... but it gets the same error. I also tried creating a new shared vault but it has the same issues. So what's going on?

Hi @printrbot,
Welcome to the forums! Sorry to hear you're having some trouble setting up Dropbox sync.
The 404 error from Dropbox indicates a problem communicating with their servers. In most cases, it's temporary and should start working again soon. If not, can you please check the Dropbox.com website from the Safari browser on your iPhone and iPad to see if has any trouble? (You mentioned the Dropbox app seems to be fine, but please check the website as well.)
If the Dropbox website and app are both working on your iOS devices, but Dropbox sync won't work in 1Password, it may help to follow these steps:
- Open the 1Password app on your iOS device.
- Double-click the Home button and swipe up on 1Password to close it.
- Restart your iOS device (hold down the power button for a few seconds and "slide to power off", then turn it back on again).
Once the devices restart, try setting up Dropbox sync again. Does it get the same error message?

I am having the same issue. I upgraded to new iPhone today. I can get to Dropbox from other Apps (Nebulous). Login to Dropbox appears to go ok, but when I chose the Agile keychain folder in the setup screen, I get the message above. I have closed the app and restarted the phone once and have the same issue. I will continue to try again later.

I was able to get one of the shared vaults to work today, but the other two are still generating the same error message. I have closed and restarted a few times on both devices, but still no luck. I need to find out what is causing this issue and how to get it fixed as we want to roll this out to the rest of our staff so that we can share passwords. However, this rather sketchy scenario is a bit troubling. Is this common with shared vaults on Dropbox or something? I see there are several threads related to this problem.

Hi @jmspell,
I'm sorry you're also getting a 404 error from Dropbox! Have you tried it again since posting your message yesterday, and is there any difference? If you're still having the problem, is it happening when trying to sync your Primary vault, or other/additional vaults from Dropbox?
Hi @printrbot,
It's strange that you were able to get one more vault to sync but not the others. Are these all additional vaults that you created on your Mac, or were they created by other people and then shared with you via Dropbox? You've mentioned they are shared, but I wanted to double-check.
Assuming they were created by other users and shared with you via Dropbox, are those Primary vaults for those users, or did they create a secondary vault to share? Do any of the shared vaults have the same name, or are they all different? Also, when you try syncing those vaults, are your iOS devices connected via Wi-Fi or cellular data?
I'm sure we'll be able to get this working for you, thanks for your patience while we try to figure it out! :)

Hi Drew_AG,
I uninstalled 1Password on the phone and then reinstalled it this morning. I went through the Dropbox authentication (including two-factor text email). I am then presented with the following on the Choose a Vault screen: /1Password.agilekeychain. When I touch that, I continue to get the "The operation couldn't be completed (dropbox.com error 404.). I have dropbox installed on a MacBook Air, Desktop Windows PC, and iPad in addition to the new iPhone. Dropbox appears to be syncing without issues on the other devices. Moreover, I can see Dropbox folders from other apps on the new iPhone (like Nebulous). I have only one vault across all of the devices. Thanks again for any help.

Hi Drew_AG,
Problem solved. Not sure what I did. The last thing I did was to add a new item on the Macbook Air to make sure that it was syncing properly with Dropbox. It did and then when I went back to the iPhone, everything worked just like you would expect. Not sure what was causing the problem. Anyway, everything works for me now.

Hi @jmspell,
I'm happy to hear it's working now, thanks for letting us know! That error often solves itself, so I'm not sure if adding a new item on your Mac triggered something that made a difference or not. It should continue to work well for you, but if you run into more problems, we'll be happy to help!

Drew, I deleted all of the shared vaults... started over... and am still getting the same message when trying to sync on my iPhone. Is this a common issue with iOS 8.1.2? I really need to get this sorted out and working correctly.

Hi @printrbot,
No, it isn't a common issue. Majority of users are not having any issues with the Dropbox sync.
The 404 error simply means 1Password requested some files from Dropbox servers but Dropbox is saying it cannot find the file 1Password requested.
You said you started over, did you put it in the same folder as the previous location of the sync file you just deleted? If yes, please disable the Dropbox sync with 1Password on your computer, let it delete the sync file, and now re-enable the Dropbox sync to create a new file in a separate new folder that you never used before. Avoid the shared folders, just to test this.
After it is done syncing, open Dropbox.com in your web browser and confirm the folder you just created is there along with the .agilekeychain folder inside it.
After that, try again with 1Password on your iOS device, see if it works now.

Hi,
I've got al similar issue with my new ipad Air 2 after installing 1password
I went through the Dropbox authentication (including two-factor text email). I am then presented with the following on the Choose a Vault screen: /1Password.agilekeychain. When I touch that, I continue to get the "The operation couldn't be completed (dropbox.com error 404.).
No problems with the dropbox app or website on the new ipad. Syncing works fine on my Windows 7 PC, ipad mini and two iphones (all ios 8.1.2)
I have only one vault across all of the devices.
The strange thing is that everythings works just fine on the other devices...
Anybody an idea? (already tried deinstall / close app, restart ipad , check dropbox connectivity on ipad etc etc)
I do not want to start over again...1password is essential to use on the ipad (with all those accounts ;))
Thanks in advance.

and of course...after two days of problems...suddenly...its working!
Still no idea what the issue is, but i'm glad I can use 1Password on the Ipad :)0 -
Mike,
I deleted the entire folder, keychain, etc and started over by creating brand new shared vaults. I was then able to connect/sync with all of them without issue on my Mac (http://pbrd.co/1xjBATz)
I can also see all three of these shared vaults when browsing dropbox.com (http://pbrd.co/1xjBOu4) and they all have the proper sub folder and files (http://pbrd.co/1xjC5gB)
When I open 1PW on my phone and go to add a new vault, I can see all of the new shared vaults (http://pbrd.co/1xjCI9T). But when I click on any of them I get the 404 (http://pbrd.co/1xjCSho).
As for Dropbox, I can browse to the shared vaults just fine via the app on my phone (http://pbrd.co/1xjDKCI)

Hi @printrbot,
Thanks for the info & screenshots! Please try checking those shared vaults using 1PasswordAnywhere from a web browser on your Mac. When you do that, does each vault show all the items they are supposed to?

Drew,
I tried via 1PasswordAnywhere and got the following three errors for each of the shared vaults when browsing on my Mac.

Hi @printrbot,
Ok, we're definitely getting closer to finding where the problem is happening. Since you're getting that error when trying to view those vaults via 1PasswordAnywhere on the Dropbox web site, that leads me to believe either 1Password has not created the keychain files correctly in the local Dropbox folder on your Mac, or Dropbox has not correctly copied the keychain files correctly from your Mac to the Dropbox servers.
On your Mac, please navigate to your Dropbox folder, and find one of the .agilekeychain files that isn't working correctly. Dropbox should have marked that file with either a green circle with a checkmark, or a blue circle with arrows. Which do you see? If it shows a blue circle with arrows, that means Dropbox hasn't yet copied the entire file to the Dropbox servers.
Let us know what you see, and we'll take it from there. Thanks!

All three look good with green checkmarks.

Hi @printrbot
Back in post #13 you stated that the vaults had the proper sub folder and files and supplied the screenshot http://pbrd.co/1xjC5gB
Do all the problematic vaults only contain
1Password.html
data/
I ask as at that same level in the path there should also be a folder titled
a
Also, if you look in inside each .agilekeychain in the
data/default/
directory what do you see?I ask as we've recently discovered a bug where if a vault is empty the .agilekeychain isn't being created properly where the current workaround is to simply create an item in the vault.
If this is what the contents of your .agilekeychain appear to be (see below) then I would guess the vault is empty and that is the cause.
How does that match up with your current setup?

Bingo!
That was the problem as all three of the vaults did not have any entries yet. Once I added a test login to each one they worked like a champ! Thank you guys for diagnosing and pinpointing the issue.

I'm only able to view primary vault w/IOS although all my other vaults are synced via dropbox on Mac.
So I try option to add vault in IOS, choose dropbox as sync method, select account, then choose keychain listed for other vault.
I'm getting the dropbox error 404. Keychain is listed on Mac in dropbox folder. What do I need to resolve this.0 -
Hello Megan, I tried creating new (names) vaults today and this allowed syncing in 1PW.
I'm not sure but I assume my original vault titles had special symbols () at the beginning and that prevented the sync??
Thanks!0 -
Interesting. Thanks for letting us know!
