iCloud Sync - How do I move from Web store to App store version?

I just upgraded to Yosemite and 1Password 5 (web store version) and have successfully switched back from iCloud sync to a Dropbox sync. I would prefer to run the sync in iCloud, so is there a way I can download the 1Password 5 (app store version) without paying the full (Australian) $64.99 asking price? I’d be happy to pay something for the privilege, but the asking price seems a bit steep just to restore the lost iCloud convenience.

Congrats on the professionalism with which 1Password is maintained and updated. I am still recommending it to anyone and everyone.

  • Hi @S_Pike,

1Password 5 for Mac is a major release and one of the significant changes we made was a complete rewrite of iCloud syncing. 1Password 5 switched to the new Apple iCloud "CloudKit" technology which is only available on OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, and limited to Mac App Store apps only. After this change we were no longer able to offer iCloud syncing in the web store version of 1Password.

We've put together a FAQ page with more information here:

    Web store and iCloud FAQ

I also want to make sure that you have a chance to review some more information on iCloud and why the Mac App Store is the only version that has access to that particular sync option. Roustem, one of our founders, has written a blog post on the iCloud rewrite and I’d like to share it with you:

About iCloud changes in 1Password 5

The only way to use iCloud in 1Password 5 is to purchase directly from the Mac App Store. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to transfer your purchase from our store to Apple's. It's also not possible for us to offer a discounted upgrade price for you to purchase the Mac App Store version.

I’m very sorry we don’t have a better migration path for you.

Very poor implementation of the software regarding the web version and App Store version. As one who just misguidedly purchased the web store version, not aware that iCloud sync could not be accessed, I am not impressed! Even after reading the lame explanation of why I now have to repurchase the App Store version if I want to use iCloud, the underlying reason still seems to be abject greed on Agilebits part. Terrible way to treat customers!

@gmckibben - If you purchased from the AgileBits web store within the last 30 days, AgileBits will issue you a refund so that you can purchase directly from Apple and then use iCloud syncing. You would need to request that refund from AgileBit, a process you could begin by confirming here that this is what you wish to do. An AgileBits team member would pick it up from there.

    Hi @gmckibben‌

I sincerely apologize for the frustration here. I was able to find a license for 1Password in our back office records attached to the email address that you have used for your forum account. According to the records, the purchase was made several months ago, so I am unable to refund your purchase.

I wish I had a better answer for you here. I'd be more than happy to help you transition from iCloud to Dropbox sync if you would like!

    Hi @sergiopw‌

I found your purchase via your forum registered email address and I've processed your refund for you. Now it may take a day or two to show up but you're free to go ahead and purchase from Apple's Mac App Store (MAS) if you're after iCloud Sync support. I hope you enjoy 1Password

No worries @sergiopw‌ I know some of our users may feel slighted but it certainly isn't our desire. We want everybody to be happy using 1Password and wanting to use it
