Installing 1password on additional device
I purchased 1Password a few years ago and have been very happy with it and recommended it to others. I had it installed on two iPads and wanted to add it to my MacBook pro. According to 1Password website I should have been able to download it from iTunes and my email address would be recognized and I would not be billed. No such luck, downloaded successfully, linked to iPads all my passwords were brought over and my credit card was billed 49.99 + tax. Notified iTunes and they emailed me back refund not available for this transaction. Looked for ways to contact AgileBits for help but no luck. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!

I think you're going to have to explain a little more clearly what happened, please. The first point is that iTunes will connect you not to the Mac App Store but to the iTunes Store (yes, I know it's confusing), from where you will download iOS apps (like 1P for iOS). I'm assuming you actually meant to refer to the Mac App Store.
The second point to make is that there is no way you can download 1P from the Mac App Store without being charged unless you have previously bought it from there. It has nothing to do with entering an "email address" anywhere.
Thirdly, if you previously bought 1P from the AgileBits store you might well have been able to upgrade from the AgileBits store either without charge or at a discounted price. In order to do so you would have had to enter on this page the email address you used when you bought 1P originally from the AgileBits store.
Now, in that context, what did you actually do and...
According to 1Password website I should have been able to download it from iTunes and my email address would be recognized and I would not be billed.
where did you read that?

Adding 1Password to an OS X device when you have previously only purchased to for iOS devices would indeed incur a charge. The licenses for 1Password are sold on a per platform basis. Each new platform reuires its own license. Your past purchase for iOS doesn't cover OS X too. Or Windows, or Android.

Hi Stephen, thanks for responding to my post. My frustration was not with 1Password but with the fact that I could not contact you guys to find out what went wrong. A few years ago I started using 1Password on my iPad and have been very satisfied ever since. Eventually I downloaded to a second iPad and again was very satisfied. Because it was a while ago I couldn't remember how I added it to the second iPad at no charge. I went to "guides.agilebits .com". That's where I read "When you purchase a single license of 1Password 4 for one daty of your devices, you can install it for no extra charge on as many devices as you own on that same platform." I am not sure which version I'm using (possibly 5.1.2) but I assume that holds true for newer versions. I do not remember if my original purchase was through iTunes but this one was. Thanks to Hawkmoth I now suspect that iPad platform might be different then platform for MacBook pro which would mean that I would be required to purchase again. I didn't realize it at the time but if that's true no problem. I'm not great with forums and as I stated earlier I wish I could have contacted someone from your company directly to explain that possibly I misunderstood what I read.
I hope this explains my concerns a bit clearer.0 -
@jondres thanks for the very helpful and full response. I'm sorry initially things were a little frustrating for you. It's always much quicker to get help through these forums and there are usually plenty of AgileBits' employees on here helping. (I'm only a volunteer here.)
Yes, 1P for iOS and 1P for Mac are two different products. What you read on the AgileBits site applies to 1P for Mac (because AgileBits sells that direct on its site, as well as through the Mac App Store). 1P for iOS is sold only through the iTunes store.
So, if you're running 1P5 for iOS (for example, and assuming you're on iOS 8—because it needs that) you can download as many copies as you want (it's free anyway, with an in app purchase to enable pro features). If you use the same Apple ID when you download the copies you need pay for the pro features only once but can use them on any iOS device that uses the same Apple ID as the one you used to make the in app purchase.
I do hope this hasn't confused matters even more. Please feel free to ask any more questions if it has, or if I've not answered anything clearly.

Hi @jondres,
I'm sorry that reaching us was difficult. We heavily encourage users to use our forums because it tends to get them the fastest response times. We're still recovering from the 5.0 launches on Mac and iOS where we received a ton of email. You always have the option of emailing us at support@agilebits.com. We just ask that you be patient with the response... all emails get answered, it may just take a while.
It looks like @stephen_c and @hawkmoth more or less explained the issue. iOS is considered a separate platform than Mac. The current platforms are iOS, Mac, Windows, Android. Once you have the license for one platform you can install it on different devices of that platform (which explains why you could install on another iPad without issue).
If you run into other issues, please do let us know. We're here to help.
Rick
