"incorrect password" when attempting to add 1password to second device

been running 1password on iphone4s running latest ios 8.1.2 -trying to add 1password onto a new ipad air2 (8.1.2) via mac app store. after downloading from store, option is to sync existing vault (vs create new vault). I then choose to "sync with iCloud" (since that is how sync is set up on my iPhone)... and then I see "1Password found existing data in ICloud" and then I hit continue and then it asks for vault password. I know my MASTER password that I use all the time to access 1Password which gives me access to my one vault (on my iPhone 4s).

When I type in this password, it says "incorrect password." In my settings on both devices I have "background app refresh" and "1Password (app refresh)" turned on. I have tried turning both devices off and turning both devices back on. I have been playing with this for a couple of hours and still nothing. Is there a "vault password" that apparently I have forgotten about that is different than the "master password" that I use all the time to access 1Password on my iPhone ?

I read on some blogs that some people have difficulty with the master password not updating on other devices when they manually change it on one of their devices- is that related to my issue ? Obviously they already have 1Password on multiple devices when that is occurring, I can not get that far. Can I "create a new vault" on the iPad Air2 but then bring my data over via iCloud ? if so, how ?

This what I would do. Now please note, it might be the correct way. On the device that it is working fine with the password, I would make a Dropbox account and sync the working device to that (change the sycn settings), so now you have a back up. I would then go to my iCloud settings and delete all 1Password backs ups. As long as all the info is still on that main device that works, I would then re-sync it to iCloud. Now if all the data deletes, you can still sync to Dropbox because you made a back up file from there.

Might be a crazy way, but at least you'll have a "back up file" in case something goes wrong in Dropbox. Are not devices on iCloud drive also?

I would still wait for someone who actually works here, because there is probably a much easier way to do this. I just like to have a back up of some sort when I am deleting stuff from another place.

I forgot to add, after you sync to Dropbox and all is done. Go on Dropbox.com to make sure that file in there, once you see it, good luck! Lol

    Prime,
    thanks !
you had asked a (rhetorical ?) question about all devices being on iCloud drive. I must confess that I am not familiar with iCloud drive. I am assuming that it is similar to google drive, which I am vaguely familiar with. All devices are on the same apple id and running latest ios, so they all sync up with each other as far as contacts, calendar, pages documents, etc. (all our "stuff" is stored in the "cloud" on iCloud)

As I (attempted) to state, I think that as I am attempting to install 1Password onto the iPad Air 2, that the 1Password server finds the my password database via iCloud, but for some reason the master password that works all the time on the 1st device is failing when attempting to bring the password vault through iCloud over to the second device (iPad Air 2)

Is there a second password associated with using 1Password that I have completely forgot about since the initial installation ? As I said, I only remember establishing one "MASTER" password that unlocks the program and allows me to use all features. The reason I might be thinking there might be a second password is perhaps semantics. As I said, the step that I am stuck on is asking for a 1Password "vault" password

    Hi @millers15,

I'm sorry you're having trouble with iCloud sync in 1Password! To make sure I understand - your master password works in 1Password on your iPhone, but not when trying to sync with iCloud during the setup of 1Password on your iPad?

If so, I think the steps from @prime may work to solve the problem, but there's a much easier way to do that. Do you have all your latest 1Password data on your iPhone? If so, try these steps:

    • First, as a precaution, you might want to save a backup of your 1Password data to a computer by following these steps.

    • Next: On your iPhone, open 1Password and go to Settings.

    • Scroll down and tap Advanced, then scroll down and tap Erase iCloud Data (confirm you want to Reset iCloud Data).
    • When you see a message confirming iCloud data has been reset, tap OK.
    • Go to Settings > Sync > Start Syncing > Sync with iCloud.
    • Follow any additional steps to complete the setup, then allow the sync to complete.

Once the sync has completed, try again to sync with iCloud in 1Password on your iPad. It should accept the master password this time. Please let us know how it works out, and if you have any questions. Thanks!

    Hello Prime and Drew_AG !

Finally able to work on this today- success ! thanks to you !

Had a little issue initially doing the "safety" backup- might have been due to using a circa 2006 macbook running only snow leopard, or may have been just because I just missed finding the "iphone" icon on the screen when itunes opened

Proceeded to use a newer imac running maverick to do the backup. Once I located iphone icon near to the top left of the window I it was smooth to create a back-up. Although, I am sometimes unsure as to what destination to save to. (ie. do you want to save a .jpg to the document folder ? I am guessing not)

Anyway, I saved the backup to my desktop. Then I opened up the 1Password app on the new iPad air 2 and synced to "existing vault," this time my master/vault password working immediately. Then grabbed my wife's new iPhone 6 and went to the app store, downloaded 1Password, and synced to existing vault in seconds.

You both are the best !

  • Hi @millers15,

On behalf of Drew and prime if he's okay with me doing this, you're welcome! I'm glad you got it working.

I suspect the interface is different on Snow Leopard because if I recall correctly, you can't upgrade to the latest iTunes versions, which is what our screenshot is based on.

I'm glad you managed to get it to work in the end on both devices. If there's anything else we can help you with, please let us know in a separate thread here.

    Thanks!
