iCloud Sync error: iOS8, 1Password 5

Hi,

When I attempt to sync with iCloud I get the following error message:

"The operation couldn't be completed. (CKErrorDomain error 4.)
1Password encountered a problem."

iCloud Drive is on, and I haven't signed out of iCloud because it is, to put it simply, a hassle.

****RANT: Speaking of "hassle", that is the theme as of late for these so-called technological advances. I hope the many hours I've spent so far getting these machines to play nice ends up paying off somewhere down the line. Because I'm considering fashioning an abacus and calling it a day!!! END RANT*****

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

I am attempting to migrate my data from my iphone 5 to my MacBook Pro, and syncing with iCloud is the first step in your tutorial:

Thanks,
ng

Hi @ncfg, welcome to the forums! I'm sorry you're having trouble getting iCloud sync to work. These things can certainly be frustrating, but we'll do our best to help! We wouldn't want you to have to switch to an abacus. ;)

The CKErrorDomain error 4 error message means CloudKit (a feature of iCloud that 1Password 5 uses for iCloud sync) is reporting that it cannot connect to the iCloud servers. Unfortunately we really don't have control over that, as that connection is handled by iOS, the iCloud servers, and your device's data connection.

Are other apps on your iPhone able to connect to the internet? If not, please check the data connection for your device. Or if the internet works in other apps, are other iCloud services working on the iPhone, or do they have problems as well? Also, when the problem happens, are you able to open websites in the built-in browser in 1Password?

You can also try these steps to see if it helps:

    • Open 1Password on your iPhone.
    • Double-click the Home button and swipe up on 1Password to close it.
    • Restart your iPhone (hold down the power button for a few seconds and "slide to power off", then turn it back on again).

Once the iPhone restarts, try again to set up iCloud sync in 1Password. Does that make any difference?

As far as your Mac goes, can you let us know which version of Mac OS it's running, and which version of 1Password is installed on it? Did you install 1Password for Mac from the Mac App Store or from our web site?

    Hi @Drew_AG,
Thanks for the reply. All good questions, and to answer them:
I am able to connect to the internet,
I am able to use 1Password's native browser,
I just checked and my calender and contacts have synced successfully today,
Lastly, exiting all apps and restarting the iphone did not solve it.

As for my Mac, it is a late 2011 Macbook Pro, running OS 10.10.1, with 1Password 5, which I believe I downloaded from your website.

Thanks for any addition help you might be able to offer!

    Hi @ncfg,

Thanks for checking those things, and for the information. Unfortunately, iCloud sync is not available in the web store version of 1Password 5 for Mac. Due to the way the new iCloud sync works, it's only available in the Mac App Store version. We have more information about that in our Web store and iCloud FAQ.

If you want to use iCloud sync, you'll need to purchase the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 (or if you purchased a previous version from the Mac App Store, it's a free upgrade). Alternately, you can switch to Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync:

I'm sorry for the confusion about that! If you get the Mac App Store version of 1Password 5 for Mac and still need help to get iCloud sync working, or if you need help setting up Dropbox or Wi-Fi sync, please let us know.

Thanks for offering the additional help. I would like to know that syncing via iCloud isn't a problem for my iphone before I purchase the apple-version. That is, unless having the wrong version on my mac caused the problem in the first place. Is the iCloud syncing issue I'm having something which can be addressed before making that purchase?

    Hi @ncfg,

The error you're getting on your iPhone isn't related to the version of 1Password on your Mac, so that's a separate issue and we can continue working to solve that. I just didn't know if you would be getting the Mac App Store version of 1Password for your Mac or not, so I wasn't sure if troubleshooting the iCloud sync problem on your iPhone was still necessary. Sorry for any confusion about that!

As I mentioned previously, the CKErrorDomain error 4 error message indicates a problem connecting to the iCloud servers, which could be related to your device's data connection. I've seen cases where, for one reason or another, the data connection on the device allowed most internet services to work, but not certain iCloud connections. What type of data connection is your iPhone using - Wi-Fi, or cellular data? If you're using Wi-Fi when getting the error, is that a home Wi-Fi network, or at an office, or somewhere else? If you're using cellular data, what carrier do you have, and what specific type of connection (4G, LTE, etc)?

Well, your line of questioning jogged my memory that while I've been playing with this I saw that my settings were not allowing cellular data use for iCloud. And it occurred to me, "DUH! My wifi connection at home is often pretty poor, so maybe 1Pword has simply had no way to access iCloud." Sure enough, I allowed cellular data use and it worked like a charm. The problem was my settings and not 1Password. Thanks for your help! Apologies for taking your time on an issue that was clearly on my end. If it's any consolation, I'll be buying the App store version for my mac.

    Cheers!

That's great news @ncfg, I'm really happy to hear you figured out the problem!

No need to apologize, we're always happy to help, even if turns out to be an iOS setting instead of something in 1Password - and as you noticed, it's not always easy to tell where the problem is coming from.

If you need anything else, we're here for you!
