    Hi @thorpey,

I noticed you posted the same question in the iOS forums, so I merged it with your question on the Mac forums so you can find all the information in one place. :)

On a Mac with OS 10.6.8, you'll need to use 1Password 3 for Mac. You can download that from the Legacy section at the bottom of our download site. 1Password 3 for Mac is no longer for sale, but if you purchase a license for 1Password 5 for Mac from our web store, you will also receive a license code you can use to activate 1Password 3.

On your iPads running iOS 8, you can download 1Password 5 for iOS from the App Store. That is a free download, and offers free basic features (there are Pro Features in 1Password 5 for iOS which can be unlocked with an in-app purchase).

After you download 1Password 5 on at least one of your iPads, you'll be able to install 1Password 4 on your iPhone running iOS 7. Open the App Store on your iPhone and go to Updates > Purchased, then find 1Password and try to download it - the App Store should allow you to download the latest compatible version.

To sync your data between 1Password 3 for Mac, 1Password 5 for iOS, and 1Password 4 for iOS, you'll need to use Dropbox sync. It's probably easiest to set that up on your Mac first. Assuming you've already installed Dropbox on your Mac, follow these steps:

    • If you haven't already done so, setup 1Password 3 on your Mac.
    • After the setup, go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences.
    • Select the General tab, then click Move to Dropbox.
    • 1Password will ask you to confirm that you’d like to move your data file to your Dropbox folder - go ahead and confirm it.

Then, you can set up Dropbox during the setup of 1Password on your iOS devices. If you have questions or need any help with that, please let us know. Thanks!

    Hey thanks Drew!
Just one thing if I may:

I'm not comfortable exchanging vaults over cloud services. I'd rather wi-fi if possible?

    Hi @thorpey‌

Sadly Wi-Fi Sync won't be an option for you. Wi-Fi Sync changed significantly in the 1Password 4 re-write and it means that 1Password 4/5 for iOS can only Wi-Fi Sync with 1Password 4/5 for Mac. As you're running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) and limited to 1Password 3 it isn't possible - sorry.

Dropbox is the only way to keep a copy of 1Password 3 for Mac synchronised with 1Password 4/5 for iOS.

Will an upgrade to mountain Lion help me?

    Hi @thorpey‌

It would yes, Mountain Lion and higher support 1Password 4. I would have mentioned it before but you expressed a desire not to upgrade.

If you're willing to upgrade to Mountain Lion it you can run 1Password 4 for Mac and that would allow Wi-Fi Syncing with 1Password 4/5 for iOS.

There is one caveat with that though. The syncing of attachments by Wi-Fi only came with 1Password 5 (sorry). If you end up wanting/needing attachments that would mean Dropbox for now. It may not be an issue but I thought it best to give you a heads up.

If you have any further questions do please ask

If you're willing to consider Mountain Lion (which I skipped) I would have thought you could run Mavericks. I don't know what others think but I found Mavericks pretty reasonable. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

    Thanks so much you guys!
very very helpful, I really appreciate it!

    Yes I will consider mavericks.
I did try Yosemite and that was horrible! Got outta there immediately!

Oh, one last thing before I do anything:
Will all this work while Im at the valuating stage (B4 payment) ?

    Thanks again!

    Hi @thorpey‌

I use Yosemite and I'm kind of getting used to it but I do believe there are a lot of people unhappy with it and feel it was rushed. You're free to try 1Password for 30 days if you download it from our site so you can play about with it and see what you think.

Actually one neat thing about Apple machines is you can boot off of external drives if you want. So you could potentially install Mavericks on an external drive (in theory anyway) and test 1Password 4 - see what you think and do all of this without touching your existing machine. Read up on that though but I'm sure it should be possible.

    Thanks again.
Now Im having trouble finding how to purchase mavericks !
Boy talk about difficult, Apple can be so great but also so frustrating.
I do believe I should upgrade to Mavericks but yeah I wasnt happy with Yosemite at all. Made my mac so slow and basically jammed it.
I have since installed 4GB RAM (up from 2GB).
Maybe I' should stick mwith Mt.Lion..?

    @thorpey‌

You can run Mavericks in 4GB. I'm not telling you it runs super fast but on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro it was fine for my normal day to day stuff. I only upgraded my MacBook Pro when I started wanting to run more programs simultaneously and had a need to be running virtual machines occasionally while doing so - that slowed it down!

Now for obtaining it... Here's where I have to confess I'd completely forgotten Apple had probably cut people off so sorry about that. It's not completely lost though.

If you happen to know anybody nearby that runs Mavericks then you can get them to help you make a bootable Mavericks installer. Here's a link to an Apple Support page to do so. As long as you know somebody who can download the installer and you have an 8GB pen drive you can make an installer that you could use. Like Yosemite, Apple gave away Mavericks for free so it isn't like you're stealing it. Sorry there isn't a more elegant way (I can't believe I forgot Mavericks was likely not available any more).

Many thanks again to you guys, you have been very patient with me.
I have purchased the Mountain Lion CD, that'll do me I reckon. After that it will have to be a new mac!

Pretty safe to say I will be purchasing 1Password as it's already so handy in the browser on both imac and ipad so far.
Just got to upgrade the mac now and het it all syncing over wifi.

Cheers, will let you know how I go.

  • On behalf of the team here, you're welcome.

We'll always be happy to help you anything you need with 1Password. Hopefully, you're all good to go with the Wi-Fi sync soon.

Well, the first thing to point out is that there was no "attached screen shot". :) So would you mind telling us the error message you're seeing, please?

    Hi Stephen.

So my screen shot provided 2 posts above ylour post is not enough?

Megan, thanks for the reply and yes it seems to be working now.

Only problem is I have 1Password 4 and I can only see to pay for the 5 version which wont work on my Mountain Lion machine ?
And I have only just upgraded to MLion so not going to Yosemite thanks.

Do I just pay the 5 version and all will be well?

Well, I don't know if it's only me but I can assure you I see no screen shot at all in your post #14 above. I'm not sure why that is, if others can see it.

Do I just pay the 5 version and all will be well?

Yes, the version 5 licence also works for version 4.

    Hi @thorpey‌

1Password 5 was a free upgrade to all 1Password 4 users and for anybody with a machine unable to run 1Password 5 they can download the older versions of 1Password from our AgileBits Download page in the legacy section at the bottom of the page. 1Password 4 uses the same licence file as 1Password 5 and so if you ever upgrade to Yosemite you can upgrade to 1Password 5 and continue using the same licence - no additional payments required.

Let us know if you have any other questions
