Vaults

I want to my daughter to have a vault, but I don't want her to have access to mine. I have set up a vault for her vault via V4 using my 1pw. Once I sign in with my 1password I can switch between the primary and her vaults. We have not yet downloaded 1password to her macbook pro. We are all mac.

My question.

How will she access her vault? Will she use the "master" password that I currently use to open the application? If so what prevents her accessing the primary vault? Do I need to create a separate "new" vault and have that be mine? If so how do I migrate my data to that vault?

    Hi @dajhnsn‌

So you have your primary vault and you want your daughter to have her own too. I'm assuming you want to maintain access to her vault is that correct?

What I would recommend is installing 1Password on her MacBook Pro and setting up a normal primary vault.

Then I'd remove any secondary vaults from your Mac that are empty or don't hold anything important.

For synching of your daughter's vault to your machine you will require Dropbox. You can either use a single account between you or each have your own.

If using your own Dropbox accounts.

I would recommend creating a 1Password folder in Dropbox and then in that folder another new one using your name. Do this for both of the accounts

Lets say you're called Bob and your daughter is called Alice.

In your Dropbox account it would be ~/Dropbox/1Password/Bob/
In your daughter's Dropbox account it would be ~/Dropbox/1Password/Alice/

Now you would want to set up Dropbox syncing on your daughter's MacBook Pro for which we have a Sync with Dropbox guide. When doing so please make sure you use the Alice folder. You then want to share the Alice folder with your Dropbox account, instructions on how to do so can be found at How do I share a file or folder with others?.

Once you've shared that folder with your Dropbox account it should appear as ~/Dropbox/Alice/ on your machine. Now simply double clicking on the 1Password.agilekeychain in Dropbox should initiate 1Password to ask if you want to add it as a secondary vault.

If you need to set up syncing of your own primary vault you would want to make sure you carefully choose the folder we made for you.

The reasons for the extra precautions are because 1Password always titles the primary vault 1Password.agilekeychain and you don't want to mix them up.

If you're using a single Dropbox account it's pretty much the same except you don't need to share a folder.

If you have any questions do please ask

thanks I do have questions. I don't need access to her vault, I just want to take advantage of 1pw which allows 1 license to have multiple vaults.

I have two other questions, I purchased v3 Jun 8, 2013 and according to what I have seen I was granted a free upgrade to v4 which I did on my macbook pro except it shows under license "Trial expired. When I did the same on my g5 which is running Yosemite, I was notified that I qualified for a free upgrade to v5 which I did but that currently shows in the upper right "trial expired". I am confused. Also the 2nd vault I set up earlier on my macbook pro is not apparent on my desktop g5. On the MacBook Pro when I launch 1pw the "unlock Primary Vault" command loads. But on the g5 just the regular prompt and the second vault is nowhere to be seen. So.............is my trail (which I don't think I ever had but instead a grandfathered in free and functional upgrade) truly expired?? And lastly why didn't the change in my account with the addition of a vault show up on my other computer ?

  • Hi @dajhnsn,

I don't need access to her vault, I just want to take advantage of 1pw which allows 1 license to have multiple vaults.

In that case, there’s nothing you have to do on the other Macs. Your daughter just need access to your license file that you can share with up to 6 family members in the household.

For each family member, they just proceed with installing 1Password and set up their own data file. None of that data will be synced or shared automatically, meaning it won’t leave anybody's local 1Password app until they explicitly enable the sync for their data.

I have two other questions, I purchased v3 Jun 8, 2013 and according to what I have seen I was granted a free upgrade to v4 which I did on my macbook pro except it shows under license "Trial expired.

Did you register your license to 1Password? It is not done automatically and has to be done for each 1Password app manually. I checked your license status and it is valid in our system for 1Password 3 through 1Password 5.

These guides will explain how to add your license:

    1. 1Password 3 for Mac: Open 1Password, go to the 1Password Menu > License.. and enter your license name and key to register 1Password.
    2. 1Password 4 for Mac

But on the g5 just the regular prompt and the second vault is nowhere to be seen.

Did you set up the sync for your secondary vault to be sync’ed? Your vaults are not automatically enabled to sync with other Macs. The trial does not limit your syncing.

And lastly why didn't the change in my account with the addition of a vault show up on my other computer ?

Can you explain how you’re syncing your data with 1Password?

First off I want to thank you for your patience and replies. While I really wish there was telephone support similar to Apple, this is certainly better than some of the other alternatives, a bit balky and chunked as there is not the immediate give and take.

I have 3 macs. one can only run v3 the 2nd is using OS 10.9.5 running v4 and the third is running OS 10.10.1 (Yosemite) v5.

Using either the computer v3 or v5 I get the following:
When I go to the 1Password Menu > License. ****I see the "official looking" certificate stating Your Copy of 1Password is Registered! Product: 1Password 3 (Single) Registered to: David Johnson and Key: with my key. At the bottom of the "certificate" there is the button "Replace License". attached

No access/ability to do as you suggest regarding _____enter your license name and key to register 1Password._____****

On the v4 computer I get the Trial Expired window with the option of "Add License" or "Buy Now". attached. When I click "Add License" it takes me to window of my computer's hard drive: Dropbox, All My Files, Movies, Applications, Desktop etc. no way to enter any data/information. If I go to Applications the iPassword 4 icon is greyed out and not live. attached.

I am synching with Dropbox and I assume it is working as any entries done on one version 3-5 appear on all versions.

  • Hi @dajhnsn‌,

You should be able to license the v4 computer with the same license that you licensed the v5 computer. They both take the same license files. The v3 license is different. So it should just be a matter of getting the purchase receipt email that you got that had the v5 license, and opening the license file it contains on the v4 computer. Alternatively we could copy it from that system. To do that simply:

    • Open a new Finder window
    • Use the Go > Go to folder... menu item
    • Copy paste this into the text field: ~/Library/Group Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits/License/
    • Click Go
    • You should see a file named License.onepassword-license
    • Copy this file to the v4 system, and double click it. This should license it.

    I hope this helps.

Is there truly no phone number to talk to support in real time or perhaps to let them remote?????. Neither worked. I opened the email on this computer, downloaded the zip of v4, opens 1pw but states "trial expired" also followed the above protocol on this computer which is the v4 and giving me the issue go>go to folder pasted: ~/Library/Group Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits/License/ and it could not be found. so???? I have attached the screen shots of the results showing after the download and after the "go" search

    Hi @dajhnsn‌

There is a small team who use remote connections to help users with the more tricky issues, my hesitation in suggesting it as an avenue of support is that there is high demand and I'd really hope we can resolve your issue here faster in contrast to having to make an appointment and wait which isn't any good for you.

I've just resent your licences to you. In that email there should be a licence key for 1Password 3 but there should also be links for downloading a licence file. As a Gmail user though there is a gotcha.

For 1Password 4/5 you will need to download your licence file from a link in the email and it should look a little like this:

    1Password 5 for Mac

    Name: littlebobbytables

    Download: https://agilebits.com/downloads

Register: With 1Password downloaded, click here to automatically add your license

    Notes:

No link? Link not working? View the complete installation steps.

Obviously I've stripped out the last two links as those are unique to the licensee. If you're viewing the email from within Gmail at all you may very well find the second URL is stripped out - thank you Gmail :\

The second or third link though should allow you to download your licence file so while we haven't attached the licence file, the information needed to obtain it should be contained within.

My suspicion is once you get a copy of this licence file the rest of the problems should pretty much fade away. Now I could be wrong and if I've misunderstood where the stumbling block is at the moment I apologise.
