Master Password not working on iPhone6
I recently upgraded from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 6, which is currently using iOS 8.1.2. I also use an iMac and Macbook Pro, both of which are using OS X 10.10.1. Both the iMac and Macbook Pro are now successfully using 1Password 5.0.2. I had been successfully using & syncing 1Password 3 on all three devices, using a master password that I will call "MP1" for the purposes of this discussion. Approximately July 2014, I decided to change the master password, to which I will refer as "MP2," on all three of these devices, but was only successful with the two Macs, not the iPhone 4s. I could still use MP1 on my iPhone 4s and get by, so I let it slide until now because it was relatively low priority.
When I got my iPhone 6, I downloaded 1Password 5 from the Apple App Store and it installed successfully. However, it does not recognize either MP1 or MP2, so of course, I can't use the app. 1Password 3.7.1 is also on my iPhone 6, and I can login successfully using MP1, so I do have a sort of work-around for now.
To summarize, I can't use 1Password 5 on my iPhone 6 using MP2 (yikes!!). I have gone through all of the troubleshooting steps listed on the web site to no avail. My suspicion is that my iPhone 4s is still linked to my account and I need to unlink that and link the account to my iPhone 6. Please advise.

Hi @Sr_Listo
Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a detailed summary of your situation! I'm so sorry to hear that you've been having trouble with 1Password lately. Let's see if we can get this straightened out.
First of all, I have a few follow-up questions:
- What have you been using to keep all of your devices in sync?
- How did you set up 1Password 5 on your iPhone 6 - did you select the option to import your data from 1Password 3? Or sync with an existing file?

Uh... Well, I think I've been using iCloud Drive to sync all my devices, and to be honest, I'm not certain about the answer to your second question. I think that I selected to import my data from 1Password 3. Thanks for the speedy response!

I had another thought regarding your question "How did you set up 1Password 5 on your iPhone 6?" I haven't set it up because I haven't been able to log in. The app is there, but I can't use it.

Hi @Sr_Listo,
Thanks for getting back to me! Here's what I suspect is happening here:
I had been successfully using & syncing 1Password 3 on all three devices, using a master password that I will call "MP1" for the purposes of this discussion.
To sync 1Password 3, you would have been using Wi-Fi, or Dropbox. If you were using Dropbox, then your iOS device would have stopped syncing a while ago, due to changes that Dropbox made to their API. We did our best to inform users of this change and encourage them to upgrade to 1Password 4, but some users did miss this message.
If you had changed your Master Password on your desktops after this change to Dropbox's API, the change in Master Password would not have synced to your iOS device (which is why you are still using Master Password #1 on your iPhone.)
So, what we need to do now is get your recent data (with your up-to-date Master Password) onto your new copy of 1Password 5 for iOS. I'll be able to give you much better instructions if you confirm which sync you are using currently. Please look in 1Password for Mac in the Preferences > Sync pane. Is iCloud selected there?

I think you're on to something. No, iCloud isn't selected. On my iMac, under 1Password Preferences, it says "Syncing with Dropbox." Also, the "Use Wi-Fi to sync this Mac with iOS devices" is unchecked. However, it also says "Last synced: 5 minutes ago," which is puzzling to me.

To add to the above, on my iPhone 6, using 1Password 3.7.1, under Settings, Dropbox is OFF, and Wi-Fi is ON.

Megan,
While waiting for your reply, I couldn't resist tinkering with the hints you provided. I can't exactly describe the trial & error path I followed, but I was able to figure out how to disable the Dropbox syncing option, select Wi-Fi syncing, then sync 1Password 5 with my MP2 on my iPhone 6. All is well; thank you for your assistance.0 -
One more question: Is there any advantage to using iCloud vs. Wi-Fi (or vice-versa) for syncing in terms of security or ease of use with different devices?

I'm not Megan but maybe I can help. Which sync method you use is really up to you. At the moment Dropbox sync is the only method that allows you to sync more than one vault (i.e., primary and secondary vaults). However, that's coming soon to wifi sync too. Dropbox also works cross-platform (i.e., with Windows too), and I believe wifi sync does not work between Mac/iOS (on the one hand) and Windows (on the other). Any 1P data you sync via Dropbox is encrypted so there's no security risk there.
All that said, I prefer local wifi sync which, for me, works seamlessly—and I just have the satisfaction of knowing all my data never goes out of my control. That is a purely personal view, of course: there are many who prefer the versatility of Dropbox.
Edit: how I managed to get though all of that without addressing iCloud, which you actually asked about, I'm not sure! However, it's very similar to Dropbox in that you can't use it between Mac and Windows (iCloud doesn't work on Windows) and can't use iCloud to sync multiple vaults. All iCloud data is encrypted so, like with Dropbox, that's not a worry.
Stephen
